01/12/2016: EuroTier 2016: Lallemand Animal Nutrition presents innovations YANG and MELOFEED

As this year’s EuroTier trade show saw record-breaking attendance, the Lallemand Animal Nutrition team was pleased to present its range of proven yeast and bacteria based solutions to an international audience.

“Our visitors expressed particularly strong interest in our latest innovations YANG and MELOFEED, but also in the well-established and proven solutions such as the probiotic yeasts LEVUCELL SC and LEVUCELL SB or the organic selenium source ALKOSEL, that have been successfully established on the German market for years and that are now directly marketed in Germany since June 2016“,
stated Dr Christian Scheidemann, Country Business Manager Germany.

“EuroTier 2016 was a very successful exhibition for us. We are pleased with the strong interest in our specific solutions. It was also a great opportunity to present to our customers not only our latest innovations but also our new and fast-expanding team for Germany, a key market for our company,”
commented Emmanuel Tabert, Commercial Director at Lallemand Animal Nutrition.

Under the motto “fermentation is our passion”, Lallemand Animal Nutrition was pleased to welcome partners and customers to the booth for a German-French happy hour on Thursday, 17 November.

About 150 guests accepted the invitation and rounded off a successful day at the trade fair with tasty fermented drinks (French wine and German beer) and country-specific finger food snacks.

YANG (Yeast Association New Generation) is an innovation born of Lallemand research.

It is a synergistic alliance of different strains of inactivated yeasts (including Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Cyberlindnera jadinii) that supports animals during stressful and challenging conditions such as weaning, feed transitions, and sanitary challenges.

YANG can be used in most feed production processes MELOFEED is a natural highly concentrated source of the primary antioxidant Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). The product is gained from freeze-dried melon juice and is marketed for animal nutrition purposes exclusively by Lallemand.

Applied separately or in combination with other antioxidants like ALKOSEL, MELOFEED supports the antioxidative status of the animals and significantly increases their immune defence. Not only, but especially in stress situations like the peripartum phase, in times of heat stress or after weaning.

EuroTier is organised by DLG and has been held every two years since 1996 in Hannover. The DLG was pleased with the again increased numbers of visitors and exhibitors: With 2,629 exhibitors and 163,000 visitors (thereof 36 000 from more than 100 foreign countries) EuroTier is regarded as the world’s leading event for the animal production industry.

01/12/2016: Aquaculture without Frontiers trustees visit to Michael New O.B.E

Four of the UK based Aquaculture without Frontiers trustees visited the organisations founder Michael New O.B.E. today in his home town of Marlow.

Michael is recovering from major heart by-pass surgery and his visitors soon discovered he is making great strides in his return to activity.

www.aquaculturewithoutfrontiers.org
Plenty of discussion took place over a meal on all things current with some wonderful humorous interludes that showed Michael to be in great form.

Plans are now being made for the next stages in the development of the UK Charitable Incorporated Organisation re-formed this year and which represents a return to prominence of the original organisation formed under Michael’s inspiration and direction in 2004.

This had been disbanded in 2012 as Michael wound down on his personal activities and at that time residual funds and legacy contacts were passed to its US counterpart (also inspired and formed by Michael) to ensure continued effort in Aquaculture without Frontiers work.

Discussion in particular covered recent exploratory trips by the UK organisation’s trustees to Vietnam and Ethiopia that are yielding new ideas for fund-raising and dissemination of charitable assistance to worthy communities and organisations.

Plans were also laid for 2017 and a significant global programme is under construction including working with the World Aquaculture Society on its inaugural African event in Cape Town next June.

The UK board has specialist expertise and contacts across the African continent which will be made available to the event organisers ensuring that deserving African communities obtain maximum benefit from that event.

Also plans for the Far East were discussed as well as the build-up of UK based training expertise to assist in the charities work. The afternoon revealed you can’t keep a good man and his good idea down!

29/11/2016: Sub-Saharan Shrimp farm shines spotlight on growing African aquaculture subsector

Nigeria’s top shrimp producer, Atlantic Shrimpers Limited has unveiled a new, 400-acre shrimp farm.

According to an article recently published on afkinsider.com, the Lagos State shrimp farm will be the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, producing shrimp for Nigeria and the export market.

Image: Jeff Attaway
However, French-owned shrimp farms in Madagascar that are about 10 times bigger may already have claimed the title of largest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Owned by Unima, a French company, the farm in Northwest Madagascar is one of two of the group’s farms spread over almost 4,000 acres of natural clay soil, producing more than 5,000 tons of shrimp per year, according to Feed Navigator.

Unima’s Madagascar farm is also the first in Africa to get internationally recognised certification for labeling that promotes responsible fish farming practices.

Farmed shrimp accounts for 55 percent of the shrimp produced globally, but African shrimp aquaculture doesn’t rank anywhere near the top of the list for regional production.

Image: Thetaxhaven

The winner receives a unique prize in the form of a scientific on-farm validation trial in one of Nutreco's research farms.

Nutreco has been at the forefront of some of the major breakthrough innovations that have made food production more sustainable.

With a world population growing to over 9 billion by 2050 and finite natural resources, the animal nutrition and aqua feed industry needs to step up its efforts.

The Nutreco FeedTech Challenge offers a 'greenhouse & pressure cooker' environment aimed at identifying, nurturing and enriching high potential concepts in pilot or proof-of-concept phases.

On-farm validation Nutreco CEO Knut Nesse points out that the validation trial for the winner is the biggest boost any start-up could wish for.

"At Nutreco we focus on bringing new science and technologies to farmers, faster and more effectively. We know that validation and knowledge on how to apply new technologies in a real farm environment are crucial for farmers to embrace innovation."

"This challenge and in particular the validation trial can provide a significant contribution to introducing new breakthrough innovations into real life. For start-ups it is a great opportunity to accelerate the development of their innovations, possibly even leading to a funding offer from Nutreco or one of our partners."

Open platform Over a competition period of two months, contestants will participate in an online platform where entries are open for comments, discussions and contributions from others. This provides a unique opportunity to connect with other start-ups, industry experts, scientists, and ultimately with farmers and the rest of the world.

In that respect, the Nutreco FeedTech Challenge is different from most other start-up competitions. Also because the winner is not rewarded with a cash prize, but with a high-value and rare opportunity for a scientific on-farm validation trial.

Challenge themes Centred around the question 'What is your breakthrough innovation - that CANNOT wait?’ the Nutreco FeedTech Challenge hopes to inspire start-ups with breakthrough innovations in the following three areas:

29/11/2016: Evonik to acquire technology from METEX for the fermentative production of methionine

Evonik Industries AG of Germany and METabolic EXplorer (METEX) of France have agreed that Evonik will acquire a technology package from METEX to strengthen its biotechnology platform for amino acids, following an agreement signed today in Paris.

•             Evonik will take over a technology package from METabolic EXplorer (METEX)

•             The acquisition will strengthen the Evonik biotechnology platform for amino acids

•             The move will also enhance the ability of METEX to commercialize other technologies that it has developed as alternatives to chemical processes

•             Further opportunities for cooperation are being explored Essen/Clermont-Ferrand.

The package includes METEX’s entire technology portfolio for the fermentative production of methionine, as well as patents, essential bacteria strains, and the inoLa™ brand.

METEX considers that this agreement will underscore the relevance of METEX’s alternative technologies and will strengthen its ability to commercialize its other technologies.

The transaction also includes a back license agreement pertaining to certain patents to be transferred to Evonik; this agreement will allow METEX to continue using these patents for activities other than those relating to methionine.

Furthermore, the companies intend to explore the possibility of a research and development cooperation agreement on the development of biotechnologically produced amino acids.

The total consideration for the transfer of this technology, including a two-year transfer service agreement, amounts to 45 million euros. Amino acids produced by fermentation are an important pillar of Evonik’s product portfolio for sustainable animal nutrition.

Image: 드림포유

Production process efficiency for Biolys® (lysine), ThreAMINO® (threonine) and TrypAMINO® (tryptophane) has been continuously improved over the past few years, and the portfolio was recently expanded to include ValAMINO® (valine).

“Through its fermentative methionine production process, METEX has demonstrated excellent development work and was able to secure wide-ranging patent protection,” says Dr. Emmanuel Auer, head of Evonik’s Animal Nutrition Business Line.

“The acquisition of this technology will expand our technological leadership for amino acids produced both chemically and by fermentation,” he explains.

“We have been able to show that the fermentation process for manufacturing methionine is a potential alternative to familiar manufacturing routes. For all of the company’s stakeholders, this is a validation of our technical leadership. Proceeds from the sale will accelerate our ability to further develop and market our other technologies, such as PDO, MPG, or new high-value-added molecules,” says Benjamin Gonzalez, CEO of METEX.

“The technology will be transferred to Evonik immediately after the required approval of Evonik committees. This is expected before mid-December 2016.”

According to Mr. Auer, “METEX has many years of experience in the field of strain development and fermentation technology. We believe the potential exists to develop viable process optimization methods for products manufactured using biotechnology—in animal nutrition and beyond. This acquisition will complement and broaden Evonik’s technology portfolio for important innovation fields.”

As Mr. Gonzalez sees it, “Amino acids are clearly high-value-added products, and we are confident that our expertise will deliver new competitive solutions beyond methionine. Improving processes for key natural products for animal feed is one of our top priorities. We look forward to the possibility of a constructive R&D partnership with Evonik to that effect.”

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in the French town of Clermont-Ferrand, METabolic EXplorer is an industrial biochemistry company specializing in the development of biotechnology production processes for bio-based substances used in a wide variety of everyday products such as textile fibers and feed additives.

In the future, METEX will sharpen its focus on developing environmentally safe production processes for the consumer goods industry, thus catering to consumers’ expectations of sustainable production processes.

With more than 60 years of experience in the production of essential amino acids, Evonik offers solutions for efficient and sustainable animal nutrition to customers in more than a hundred countries around the world.

By extending its product range beyond amino acids to include innovative feed additives, Evonik plans to contribute even further to the efficiency of animal feed and to create additional value for its customers.

Evonik products and services in the area of animal nutrition play a key role globally in healthy and affordable feed production that conserves natural resources and reduces the carbon footprint.

28/11/2016: Biomar’s joint venture in China has aquired fish feed company Haiwei

BioMar Group’s Joint Venture in China, BioMar-Tongwei Biotech (Wuxi) Ltd has acquired 100 percent of the shares in the fish feed company Haiwei, which is situated in the South of China.

Carlos Diaz, CEO of the BioMar Group, stated that the acquisition fits perfectly with BioMar’s strategic focus on the top end of the Chinese aquaculture market.

“We are very pleased to have concluded this agreement on behalf of BioMar-Tongwei. Haiwei has a very good reputation among fish farmers and we will continue to build on the Haiwei brand and carry on with the company setup.”

“We are confident that BioMar can contribute to the further development of Haiwei and continue their success through process knowledge, R&D methodology, and continuous improvement of feed recipes”, said Carlos Diaz.

Haiwei was during the last 3 years been owned by Tongwei Co. Ltd, BioMar’s joint venture partner in China. Tongwei Co. Ltd has concluded a successful turnaround of Haiwei and today the company is a leading supplier of feed to high value fish species like Japanese sea bass in Southern China.

Carlos Diaz underlined that the acquisition is in line with BioMar’s global strategy ‘Shaping the Future’:

“The acquisition is an important initiative, consistent with our growth strategy in core markets as well as within new species and geographies. In this regard, this is also an important step for our Emerging Markets Division, which plays a significant role supporting the strategy, securing growth for BioMar and building up new markets, integrating acquisitions, and servicing new species.”

Geographically the acquisition of Haiwei is in line with BioMar’s ambitions for the joint venture in China due to its location in the south of the country, near Macau, in an important aquaculture region.

The acquisition will add more than 60.000 tonnes of volume to BioMar’s Chinese joint venture company.

“Since the announcement of the joint venture between BioMar Group and Tongwei Co. Ltd to establish a feed company in China, the shared project has had a very positive development. There is continuous collaboration with our partner and we are working to bring high performance feeds to the Chinese market.”

“BioMar fish feed is already being produced in Chengdu in South Central China and a new factory is being built in Wuxi area, nearby Shanghai, with an initial capacity of 50.000 tonnes with a possibility for expansion to 100.000 tonnes in the future”, explained Mr Diaz.

The construction of the BioMar-Tongwei plant in Wuxi is in progress according to schedule and is expected to start operations in the second half of 2017.

25/11/2016: Chile first country to approve Elanco’s novel sea lice treatment for salmon

Unique treatment approach has potential to provide longer-lasting sea lice prevention and control

Elanco’s novel in-feed treatment has been approved for the prevention and control of sea lice in salmon and trout in Chile.

Sea lice are a significant challenge for salmon farmers, and this new breakthrough tool offers an innovative, long-acting treatment alternative.

Chile is the first country to grant marketing authorisation to the treatment. The approval in Chile follows the completion of a series of studies, demonstrating its efficacy against Caligus rogercresseyi,[i] the most common louse species impacting salmonid farms in Chile.

Image: Peter Harrison
The study demonstrated that salmon treated with the medication remained below the Chilean industry regulated threshold for an extended period of time, compared to the untreated group, which exceeded the threshold five times in the same period.[ii]

“After years of dedicated research working with farmers and industry experts, Elanco is proud to bring this much-needed treatment to salmon farms in Chile, and is working hard to bring it to other markets around the world,” said Carlos Kuada, Global Head of Aqua Business, Elanco Animal Health.

“Managing these parasites is a constant strain on salmon farmers – it is time consuming, cumbersome, and stressful to both fish and farmers. This option can help provide relief from sea lice management for an extended period of time, alleviating that stress.”

The treatment is given in feed to fish in fresh water before they are transferred to the sea. Studies have shown that it inhibits the formation of chitin in sea lice, which prevents the lice from developing into adults.

Fish treated with the medication are already accepted for trade with major export markets, including the US, EU, Norway, Chile, Japan and Brazil. Sea lice are estimated to cost the global industry more than $1 billion per year.[iii]

Current treatments are often highly disruptive to salmon farms, as many require sea bath treatments. Additionally, the efficacy of some treatments is limited due to the emergence of drug resistance.

To date, no resistance in sea lice has been detected in this novel treatment. Elanco is currently working with authorities in other countries to help bring this potentially important solution to market as soon as possible.

The validation of products in regional markets is important to accelerate the transfer of best practices from one market to the other.

The initial focus of the programme is on feed additives, animal health supporting products and young animal feed.

“We develop new products, models and service tools at our global research centres. But a proof of concept is important. Application knowledge taking into account local conditions, such as climate and farming practices, is a critical success factor of many innovations we develop,” says Leo den Hartog, director Trouw Nutrition R&D.

“A good example is our blended feed additive solutions. Validation studies in different regions have already shown that similar performance responses can be obtained compared to antimicrobial growth promoters.’’

Global research scope
The validation teams are based in Asia-Pacific, Brazil, China, Europe and North America. Research proposals are set up in close collaboration with universities, research institutes and key customers in the respective regions. Based on standardised protocols, the teams will execute validation trials of nutritional solutions that have been developed in the five research centres that Trouw Nutrition operates in the Netherlands, Canada and Spain.

22/11/2016: The interview with Carlos Diaz, CEO, BioMar

Carlos Diaz, CEO, BioMar

With a career that began in the aquaculture industry back in 1995, first fish farming and then feed production, Carlos Diaz is a veterinarian with an MBA and several post studies in pharmaceuticals, management, marketing and finance.

Throughout all of these years, Mr Diaz has witnessed the development of our industry; having occupied several positions in various locations around the world, before being appointed as BioMar’s CEO in 2014.

According to Mr Diaz, who joined the company in 2000, “BioMar has developed a lot in all these years,” adding that, “We have a great company, a fantastic brand, committed people and owners.”

In your time employed within our industry, have you witnessed any significant changes and how do you feel that BioMar has reacted to these changes?

Definitely, in mature markets like the salmon market, consolidation is a trend. The commercial and technical skills to deal with this trend and with bigger and more demanding customers have, of course, been on our agenda for a long time.

In the less developed markets, we see the same trend as in salmon; customers get more demanding, food safety and sustainability get more important and there is a growing demand for high quality feed based on the total economic performance of the feed rather than just on the price per kg.

Overall, farmers are becoming more and more competent and have an understanding of the importance that this industry will play in the future and of the importance of feed in the value chain. This means that we need to be not only a supplier to the farmers, but also a partner.

Moreover, sustainability and social responsibility are a must, and also a trend, so as a feed supplier BioMar needs to adapt and hopefully continue being in the driving seat all of the time.

The same goes for innovation, research and development, where we need to create new feeds, concepts and solutions every day and deal with the increasing complexity of raw materials at volatile prices, getting scarce and more expensive.

Sustainability has become a very important phrase throughout the aquaculture industry in recent years. But why do you think that this is the case, and why should companies such as BioMar care about the world that we live in?

Sustainability definitely has become an important concern throughout aquaculture. BioMar has taken this into account when we redefined the BioMar Purpose last year, looking at who we are and who we want to be, more than a strategy only.

In this purpose we identified four guiding principles that we strive for: Innovation, Cooperation, Performance and Sustainability. Our purpose is: “We are Innovators dedicated to an efficient and sustainable global aquaculture”.

This is more than just caring about fish feed. For us, sustainability is a very serious concern, both in our operations and our way of doing business. Sustainability also is a tool for working with our customers and for differentiation, for telling the story and for developing even more attractive products.

We have created very sophisticated tools that take sustainability into account, like the BioSustain concept and our Eco-Efficiency Manager. Having these tools we can really work together with customers and retailers in order to create value and be proactive towards consumers and other stakeholders.

With the opening of the fish food factory in Turkey in conjunction with Sagun, is that a region that BioMar is looking to focused on?

Turkey has been on our radar for a long time, for obvious reasons, we are leaders in high performing feeds for trout, sea bass and sea bream in Europe, and Turkey is a big market for these species.

Using our feed factory in Turkey as a base we also expect to go further east, where we also see some interesting opportunities.

Part of the USDA-funded FEEDing Pakistan aquaculture project, the course was specifically developed for women studying Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU).

The seminar, attended by 24 students and university faculty, included visits to feed mills in the country as well as a visit to a local fish farm.

Led by ASA/WISHH Country Representative, R.S.N. Janjua, this study tour marked the first time a group of female Pakistani students were allowed to visit large scale feed mills in the country. 96% of survey respondents reported learning new information about soy and its functional properties in fish feed during the seminar.

This activity was organised with the collaboration of the Zoology Department of LCWU, Zoological Society of LCWU, Society for Promotion of Science and Technology of LCWU, the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA), and the Ministry of Industries, Government of Pakistan.

21/11/2016: Aquaculture Europe 2016 provides plenty of ‘Food for Thought’

by Andrew Wilkinson, International Aquafeed Magazine

The great and the good of the Aquaculture world descended on the Scottish capital from 20th - 23rd September as the European Aquaculture Society celebrated its 40th birthday.

Attended by 1700 participants from 65 countries, all with a vested interest in the aquaculture industry, the biggest Aquaculture Europe to date was held this year at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), Scotland.

The mantra of this year’s conference, “Food for thought” was designed to give those in attendance, “something to think about, something to be seriously considered and something that provides mental stimulation and nourishment.”

It goes without saying that very few in attendance would disagree that the organisers had far exceeded this objective.

Aquaculture Europe 2016, was organised by the European Aquaculture Society with the cooperation and support of Marine Scotland, part of the Scottish Government, and The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland.

Brought to the Aquaculture world with the very able assistance of ‘Gold Sponsor” Biomar, Aquaculture Europe 2016 presented the latest science to support further development; with industry panels also discussing key opportunities and areas where further sustainable growth in aquaculture should be encouraged.

In recent years, aquacultural production in Europe has plateaued, resulting in overall output remaining more or less constant in volume since 2000.

So with this in mind, it is now more important than ever for our industry to get together and share one of the most crucial collective tool that they have at their disposal - their collective pool of knowledge. And share they did.

Set in some of the EICC’s purpose built conference rooms and split into 60 sessions, almost six hundred academics and industry professionals delivered a proud total of 674 papers in what was an incredibly well orchestrated and elaborate network of conferences that covered almost every aspect of aquaculture.

Meanwhile, down in the main conference room an impressive assortment of 75 companies and organisations plied their trade, forming new friendships and business relationships in the process.

As well as the exhibitions and conferences, each day began with a plenary session; with each presenting a very unique insight into the aquaculture industry. Following the conclusion of the plenary sessions, a short coffee break was then swiftly followed by the commencement of an impressive array of “Parallel Sessions.”

One very minor issue was that the scheduling of the parallel sessions often saw a clash of two fantastic lectures; which presented one with a dilemma as to which talk to attend! However, such was the quality and the fact that the show was limited to three days, I’m sure that the organisers can be forgiven for this.
