Aquaculture UK postponed until May 2022

Aquaculture UK – the UK's most important aquaculture exhibition and conference – has been rescheduled from May 2021 to May 2022.

The show, which was due to take place on 19-21 May, will be deferred to the new dates of 3-5 May 2022 at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore, Scotland.

The decision follows the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic and comes after close monitoring of information from the government, as well as consultation with the aquaculture community.
 


'Although all the signs are positive for a restart of events from Easter, we feel running Aquaculture UK in May is too early. We want to give everyone the best possible chance for a great show, so it is important we have a clear run into the event,' says Event director Cheri Arvonio.

'We want to make the right decision for our community and having consulted with our exhibitors, visitors and partners, we've decided the best action to serve everyone is to postpone the show to its regular home in the show calendar year.

'We're disappointed not to be able to bring everyone together as soon as we'd hoped. But we're committed to delivering an event in 2022 that provides the community with the most effective opportunities for networking, education, and interaction – and we're confident that the move to next May means we'll be able to return with the best show possible.

'The good news is that we won't be letting our May 2021 dates pass without marking the occasion. We'll be launching a virtual sustainability seminar in the coming weeks to provide a much-needed platform for the industry to connect.

'We're also excited to announce that Aquaculture UK will be launching a newsletter in the next few months. Aquabuzz, the bi-weekly newsletter will give the aquaculture community an excellent opportunity to share news, communicate about products and services, and stay connected at a vital time for our industry.

The Online Milling School (OMS) winter course 6th session on the Pelleting Process will be taking place Wednesday January 27 at 2pm Bangkok time (GMT+7).

In this module the fundamentals of the pellet mill operation and the many variable factors that influence the final pellet quality will be explored. Ryan Alan S. Celis is a Mechanical Engineer by training. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman in 1987 where he also earned his Certificate in Advanced Military Training in 1985. He placed 6th in the 1987 Mechanical Engineering Licensure Examinations. Ryan also took his Masters in Business Administration from the Ateneo de Manila Graduate School of Business in 1992. He started his professional career in San Miguel in 1988 which saw him undertake various positions, first as a Cadet Engineer, then as Head of Preventive Maintenance, Plant Engineer, and Manufacturing Manager of the company's major feedmilling facility in Manila. On top of this, he also managed the company's drying facilities for brewery by-products. His last assignment was as Plant Manager of a newly constructed feedmilling facility outside of Manila.

Novus partners with biotech innovator Agrivida to bring new feed additive technology to the market

In 2020, Novus International, Inc., a global leader in nutrition and health solutions for the animal agriculture industry, announced plans to redefine its business through an enhanced focus on gut health and innovation. The Missouri-based company is making good on its strategy with a new partnership.

Agrivida, a privately held biotechnology company based in Massachusetts, was founded in 2003 by scientists from MIT who discovered a way to incorporate feed additives directly into corn grown for production animals. By having the additive inside of the grain, the molecules are more efficiently absorbed, and producers can improve both animal performance and their bottom line.

The partnership combines Novus's nearly 30 years of research, sales and marketing experience with Agrivida's unique technology, allowing both companies to grow the customer base as well as explore new innovative products and solutions through R&D collaboration.

GAA appoints industry veteran Brian Perkins as COO

Seafood industry veteran Brian Perkins is joining the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) as its chief operating officer, the organisation announced on January 18, 2021.

Mr Perkins comes to GAA with more than 40 years of seafood experience in the certification space as well as in the events and media space. For the past six years, he has acted as Regional Director Americas for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the world's leading wild fisheries certification program. At MSC, Mr Perkins built a strong team that energized the program in the Americas region, increasing consumer awareness, the number of MSC-labeled products and the number of participants engaged with the MSC program. He also established strong working relationships with other NGOs and industry.

Mr Perkins comes at a critical time for GAA as it expands from aquaculture to wild fisheries with the addition of the Seafood Processing Plant Standard Issue 5.0 and the Responsible Fishing Vessel Standard, which is owned by GAA's sister organization, Global Seafood Assurances. Over the course of 2021, operations and outputs of GAA and Global Seafood Assurances will merge under one roof, called the Global Seafood Alliance.

In addition to developing and implementing strategies to integrate and transition to the Global Seafood Alliance, Mr Perkins will be responsible for managing Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), the world's leading third-party aquaculture certification program, including oversight of the BAP market development team, program integrity team and certification team.

'The seafood community thrives on trusted personal relationships cultivated and tested over time. It benefits not only when individuals do well by their company, but equally when those individuals contribute to the greater good through their involvement in pre-competitive activities. Brian Perkins' career is an example of the attributes we look for in all our associates, and I am personally delighted that he will be joining us as our COO,' says GAA CEO Wally Stevens.

Mr Stevens adds, 'We're fortunate in that we've had a fruitful working relationship with Brian since his days at Diversified Communications, where he oversaw the company's seafood expositions and publications. He comes with a wealth of knowledge in events and media that will be applied to GAA's activities.'

Mr Perkins has four decades of experience in the seafood industry, starting out working in a salt fish factory in Iceland and a small fishing boat out of Grimsey, Iceland, after which he spent nearly a decade as a commercial fisherman in Maine.

'I am very excited to be joining GAA and to help transition the organisation to the Global Seafood Alliance. This is a unique opportunity to work across both wild and farmed seafood, helping to ensure it is responsibly produced and handled throughout the supply chain. Seafood is critical to the world's food portfolio,' says Mr Perkins. 'The concept of filling in the gaps of assurances to include, for example, social responsibility in wild seafood harvesting and processing is the right idea at the right time. I look forward to leveraging my experience and knowledge to help contribute to the development of the sustainable seafood industry.'

The COO will be based out of GAA's Portsmouth, New Hampshire, headquarters, reporting to GAA CEO Wally Stevens. The new COO role was added to the organisation with the intent that he or she would transition to the CEO role in due time.

Cargill sets new standard for premix production with opening of new premix and nutrition facility

During a virtual event for producers, customers and media, Cargill, the global food, agricultural, financial and industrial products company, announced the opening of its new premix animal nutrition facility in Lewisburg, Ohio, USA.

The 220,000 square-foot, future-ready facility is deploying advanced technology not previously used in animal agriculture or pet food production that allows the use of less resources to produce feed, while ensuring the highest quality and traceability of its products for Cargill customers.

The Lewisburg West facility broke ground on November 8, 2018 and represents a $50 million investment in expanding Cargill's existing feed production operations. The facility produces non-medicated feed and supports Cargill and Provimi branded animal nutrition premixes and products, along with additives and specialty and custom blends.

'It started with thinking differently about how to best meet the changing needs of our customers, along with a commitment to invest and innovate for the future,' says Adriano Marcon, president of Cargill's animal nutrition business. 'Now, we believe the new facility sets a new standard for premix production giving our customers unmatched confidence in our animal nutrition offerings.'

The Lewisburg West facility includes a 160-ft steel premix tower, along with a new benchmark of automation and controls that provide precise measurements and traceability that exceed industry standards and significantly reduce cross contamination risks. Soft, flexible hoppers for micro-ingredient dosing provide gram-level precision in production, and stainless-steel design makes cleaning the systems easier and more effective.

The highly automated production process with continuous human monitoring ensures accuracy and reduces the risk of injuries to employees. Among several new features, the facility's humidity and temperature controls, strict management of ingredients and plant access will further protect food safety as well as customers' brands.

'The plant was designed with feed and food safety as a top priority,' says Mr Marcon. 'We wanted to provide our customers peace of mind, by increasing the transparency around the food their farm animals and pets are eating.'

Each of the plants' four segregated production lines can run a mix from start to finish in approximately one hour, providing increased capacity across Cargill's network of feed facilities. As a non-medicated facility, it allows for more support to livestock and poultry operations raising animals without the use of antibiotics and opens new opportunities for the company within the pet food market. It's estimated that Lewisburg West will produce 154,000 tons of non-medicated animal nutrition products and premix across its production lines each year.

The Multisize Sample Carousel: the newest sampling innovation from Dinnissen Process Technology

With Dinnissen's Multisize Sample Carousel, producers can now take samples of different sizes in an automated sampling process. Using this innovation, producers can also determine the order and frequency per sample size. This allows for the automated serial collection of samples for different purposes, such as: starter sample, chemical sample, bacteriological sample, hourly sample and batch sample.

The Multisize Sample Carousel collects up to 20 samples in different shapes, without human intervention. The innovation can be seamlessly integrated into new and existing production lines and reduces downtime to a minimum. Dinnissen Process Technology works with the customer to draw up a sampling plan to create the most efficient sampling process possible, tailored to each customer's specific situation.

Aller Aqua Group to promote carbon footprint of feed and source soya regionally

The Aller Aqua Group has during 2020 taken measures to stop buying South American soya for their European fish feed production. During 2021 the group will take the next big step in realising their sustainability-strategy, when they start CO2-labelling the fish feed produced at their three EU-factories.

During 2020 Aller Aqua stopped using South American soya in its European factories and is instead using 100 percent regionally produced soya from Europe and surrounding countries.

By sourcing soya regionally, Aller Aqua addresses the increasing concern of deforestation in certain South American countries. 'This deforestation issue has been an increasing concern, not least during 2020, and as we had the opportunity and organisational setup to make the choice of eliminating South American Soya from our European production – this is what we have done!' explains Aller Aqua's CPO and Group Vice President, Henrik T. Halken.

Calculations by FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) on behalf of the Donau Soja organisation shows that CO2-emission from salmon feed can be reduced by as much as 41 percent by exchanging the South American soya.

Mr Halken further explains, 'Generally we focus on sourcing as locally as possible, and I estimate that approximately 90 percent of the raw materials we use in our European factories today, are of European origin. This saves transportation and CO2-emission. We are happy to take a leading and active position in creating solutions for sustainability goals both nationally and in Europe, such as the launch of the European Green Deal.'

First in the market to Co2-label feeds
During the first half of 2021 Aller Aqua will take the next step in their work with sustainability, benefitting both customers and nature.

'As far as I am aware, we are the first on the market to do this! We want to declare the CO2-value on all our feeds produced in the EU. This shows our customers the carbon footprint that the feed in question has. We are convinced that our change from South American soya will show significant advantages in terms of a lower carbon footprint,' says Mr Halken.

The initiative will give Aller Aqua's customers an opportunity to make an active choice regarding CO2 and help highlight the low environmental impact of their fish production towards both supermarkets and consumers.

If you wish to reduce the carbon footprint from your diet, fish is a great option based on the low feed consumption per kilo meat produced.

The CO2-labelling of the feed will be carried out using internationally recognised standards also used by other international feed producers.

Register now for the 5th Annual Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference

The 5th Annual Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference co-organized by VIV, International Aquafeed and Fish Farming Technology magazine and Dr Mian Riaz of Texas A&M University is once again taking place on March 10-11, 2021. The conference will be hosted as a LIVE online event over the course of two days.

This rendition of the conference will specialise in extrusion and the related equipment for aquatic feeds.
