Multinational feed additives producer Nutriad, a leading expert in practical solutions for Mycotoxin Management, sponsored the 10th World Mycotoxin Forum that took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The central theme of this year’s forum was “Taking mycotoxin control to the next level.”

The World Mycotoxin Forum is the leading international meeting series on mycotoxins that brings food and feed industry professionals, researchers and government representatives from all over the world together in one renowned event.

Nutriad presented various scientific posters at the forum, to share key finding in recent studies. Effect of two mycotoxin deactivators on the reduction of aflatoxin M1 levels in milk of lactating dairy cows fed aflatoxin B1 (Conducted at the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA); Kinetic behavior of deoxynivalenol in pigs (Conducted at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Ghent University, Dept. of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Biochemistry, Belgium) and The effect of fusarium mycotoxins and a mycotoxin deactivator on performance and metabolism of early lactation autumn calving dairy cows (Conducted at the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, Lyons Research Farm, Lyons Estate, Celbridge, Naas, Co Kildare, Ireland).

As one of the key sponsors of the event, Nutriad was asked honour the best poster at the closing ceremony. Olga Averkieva, Business Development Manager Mycotoxin Management, presented the Best Poster award to Anne-Grete Roer Hjelkrem of the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research for her display on Weather conditions associated with mycotoxin accumulation in Norwegian oat.

03/04/2018: Phytogenic feed supplements: Natural breeding is the goal

In shrimp or fish farming, the topic of sustainability is omnipresent

Antibiotics and growth promoters can no longer be an option for optimal health management with regards to animal nutrition. Natural phytogenic feed supplements such as oregano are a viable alternative. We concentrate solely on aroma premixes and feed supplements made of pure natural oregano oil and are known as the market leader in this sector.

Shrimp and fish farming are gaining in importance, since the demand for seafood from aquaculture is rising. Challenges in this sector not only include new production technologies and special animal nutrition, but also optimal health management. The latter is particularly relevant in view of the occurrence of new viral diseases in shrimp farming, such as the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) or bacterial diseases like acute hepatopancreatic necrosis syndrome (AHPND).
 

Phytogenic feed supplements
Phytogenic feed supplements are used with all livestock species and domestic animals to stabilise the gastrointestinal tract and to promote the immune status. Oregano's antibacterial mode of action is also interesting for the aquaculture industry. The phytogenic additive can be mixed in directly at the compound feed factory or added directly to the feed at the farm.

Our goal is to achieve health-stabilising and performance-enhancing effects. Using the example of shrimp breeding, Dosto-oregano can naturally increase the survival rate and growth of the animals, as shown by current trials in Ecuador.

Feed supplements and their use in aquaculture operations is a huge topic worldwide. Through regulation of the use of antibiotics and growth promoters in the animal feed, alternatives must be found for the farms. Natural breeding with high profitability is the goal, both in the organic sector and for conventional breeding.

Strengthening of the animal's immune system is the central factor of testing. Thanks to the improved gastrointestinal health of the animals, they are more resistant to bacterial diseases and are able to overcome them better. We did not observe any side effects. Based on our positive experiences, the same can be expected for other animal species.

Can you use kitchen oregano?
Using kitchen oregano would not deliver the desired results. The same can be assumed for nature-identical oregano. The constituents of the essential oil are standardised, so we can always ensure constant quality. Moreover, we are extensively certified. This is the requirement for success with livestock owners.

Is it economical?
Feedstuffs are the most important parameter in livestock farming, since they represent up to 70 percent of the production costs. It can be worthwhile to start here. We can tell you about farms that were able to achieve a higher gross margin per breeding cycle thanks to improved feed efficiency and increased health. Since feed supplements are not subject to pharmaceutical regulations, they can be used continuously up until the fish are caught or the animals are slaughtered.

Almex company profile

Almex specialises in single screw extrusion equipment, from the extrusion unit to complete installations. They are a family owned, independent company.

Almex extruders and Contivar Expanders are in use worldwide for fishfeed, oil extraction, petfood, animalfeed plants, the food industry and the processing and chemical industries. Almex started early 1970's with repair and installation of extruders. 


For use in Europe these units needed much modifications, so they decided to design and built in the Netherlands a complete range of extruders for 500 to 15.000 kg/hour capacity.

These extruders did find their way to clients worldwide. Today the largest extruder has a diameter of 400 mm, a barrel length of 4800 mm and a drive of 500 kW.
