IFIF and FAO launch new manual of good practices for the feed sector

The International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) launched the new manual of Good Practices for the Feed Sector: Implementing the Codex Alimentarius Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding at their joint annual meeting 2020.

The manual was first published in 2010 and has been a valuable tool to increase knowledge and improve feed safety at the production level, and it is widely recognised and used in many countries around the world. This second publication is a fully revised, updated and expanded version of that manual and addresses recent developments in feed production and benefits from the latest scientific and technical knowledge.
 


The objective of the manual is to provide comprehensive information and practical guidelines to farmers, producers and all stakeholders along the feed value chain to comply with the requirements of the Codex Alimentarius Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding. The application of the Code is an important step for the expansion of international trade of feed and products of animal origin. Both feed/food exporting and importing countries can benefit from a greater and safer trade of feed and products of animal origins.

This manual is intended to guide managers of feedmills, the feed industry as a whole and on-farm feed mixers and producers. It will also be of value to national competent authorities, in particular those engaged in feed inspection, in their supervisory roles. It can also serve as a training manual and a guide to setting up national feed associations.

Daniel Bercovici, IFIF Chairman, highlights that, 'this manual is a key result of the long-standing and strong collaboration between IFIF and FAO and serves as an important tool to promote feed safety, which is a key element in the sustainable production of food of animal origin: it is a prerequisite for food safety and human health, as well as a necessity for animal health and welfare.'

Daniela Battaglia, Animal Production Officer at the Animal Production and Health Division of the FAO, say, 'FAO and IFIF have a long standing partnership. Together they also strive to promote feed safety globally as a component of access to trade, income generation and sustainability. In fact, feed is an integral part of the food chain and its safety has been recognized as a shared value and a shared responsibility.'

Alexandra de Athayde, IFIF Executive Director, adds that, 'this new manual also serves as the basis of the IFIF Capacity Development training programme and the IFIF feed safety e-learning course. Both IFIF and FAO hope this manual will meet the expectation of a constantly evolving sector and will continue being an essential tool to support producers living up to their roles and responsibilities to ensure sustainable food production and feed a growing world population.'

Vertical cooler upgrade with advance sanitary cone for safety and cleaning

Centered around an Advanced Feature Sanitary Cone (AFSC), a new vertical cooler upgrade option, introduced by Extru-Tech Inc of the USA promises a new level of food safety and cleanability.

While the primary focus of the upgrade is the ability to provide a safer, more consistent product customers also benefit from reduced costs and downtime associated with cleaning in addition to improved cooling ability.

According to Norm Schmitt, corporate sales manager for Extru-Tech, the new AFSC is similar in design to the cone used on the next-generation vertical coolers.

'In this case, though, the Advanced Feature Sanitary Cone was designed to replace both the internal perforated cone and the solid external cone used on older pre-2014 vertical coolers, with minimal modifications,' says Mr Schmitt.

'The Advanced Feature Sanitary Cone features a 'cone-in-cone' design, which not only allows for 360-degree air entry, but provides much greater cleaning access than the internal perforated cone that was problematic to clean.'

As Mr Schmitt explains, the design engineers also incorporated cost savings and compatibility into the upgrade design wherever possible. For example, the new AVSC height is the same as the older cone, which means the overall height of the cooler will not change.

In turn, that means the height of the existing cooler legs will not change and the product inlet and discharge points will remain the same. Plus, the new cone has been designed with reinforcements to allow the feeder to hang from the cone using the existing tension cables.

In addition, the vertical cooler upgrade includes a new continuous laser level probe assembly, which provides continuous, accurate and reliable level control inside the cooler. A variable frequency drive (VFD), which is required to regulate airflow through the AVSC during the cooler fill cycle, will also be provided if the cooler fan is not already equipped with a VFD. 

Lastly, existing controls will be upgraded or modified to regulate fan speed based on the product level in the cone.
