Climate champions Lewis Pugh and Mike Robinson receive honorary degrees from Stirling

The University of Stirling has bestowed honorary doctorates on Lewis Pugh and Mike Robinson – two public figures who have dedicated their lives to campaigning for the environment.

Endurance swimmer and environmental diplomat, Mr Pugh – who has been instrumental in protecting more than two million square kilometres of vulnerable ocean – was recognised for his outstanding contribution to sport and international environmental issues.

Mr Robinson, the Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS), was pivotal in establishing the diverse and impactful coalition Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. He was recognised for his outstanding commitment to delivering and embedding climate solutions to protect the world.

They received their honorary doctorates at graduation ceremonies on the University of Stirling campus. Across four ceremonies held, a total of 1,925 students will graduate from the University, joining its 100,000-strong global alumni community.

Speaking after receiving his honorary degree, Mr Pugh drew parallels between his environmental work and the world-leading research conducted by the University of Stirling, home to Scotland's International Environment Centre and the Institute of Aquaculture.

Mr Pugh says 'I am delighted and humbled to receive this recognition and become a Doctor of the University of Stirling. I have enjoyed visiting the Stirling campus, and speaking with students and staff, including scientists conducting vital research into the climate crisis and its impacts.

'There is much synergy between the mission of the Lewis Pugh Foundation to draw attention to the environmental crises playing out in our oceans – such as overfishing, wildlife decline, global warming and plastic pollution – and the impactful research being conducted in this area at Stirling. I look forward to working with the University in the future.'

Reacting to his honorary doctorate, Mr Robinson, an alumnus of the University, says, 'I am absolutely delighted to accept this honorary degree. As a graduate of Stirling, it is an especial honour, indeed it is an important institution in our family – I met my wife at Stirling and my son is also now a student, so it is very close to my heart. I could not be more pleased.'

Mr Pugh draws attention to the plight of the world's vulnerable ecosystems by taking on mammoth swim challenges and he was the first person to complete a long-distance swim in every ocean across the world. In a career spanning 35 years, he has pioneered more swims around famous landmarks than any other swimmer in history with his feats including the North Pole, a glacial lake on Mount Everest and the English Channel. He is the United Nations Patron of the Oceans; and his dream is to protect 30 percent of the world's oceans by 2030.

A Stirling alumnus, Mr Robinson decided to devote his life to protecting the forest and the environment after he was left shocked by the impact of humans on nature during a trip to Borneo. He has been Chief Executive of the RSGS since 2008, having previously worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh, and was pivotal in bringing together 60 different organisations under the banner of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland – which has played a key role in driving and influencing decisions on Scotland's climate targets and activity.

He is a key supporter of the University, helping in the establishment of Scotland's International Environment Centre, and working with Stirling colleagues – in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh – on the creation of a new Climate Solutions qualification for business leaders.

Professor Sir Gerry McCormac, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling, says, 'Summer graduation is always a highlight in the university calendar – but this fortnight of events has been incredibly special, as we've been able to celebrate three cohorts of students – from 2020, 2021 and 2022.

'We're delighted that they are joined by four outstanding honorary graduates who are making a real difference to the world in their respective fields and are excellent, inspirational role models for our students and graduates.

Joint COCERAL, FEDIOL, and FEFAC reaction to the proposed deforestation regulation

Following the adoption of the General Approach of the Council on the EC proposal for a regulation on deforestation-free products during the Environment Council meeting of 28 June, COCERAL, FEDIOL, and FEFAC welcome certain elements like the Council's move to avoid duplication of due diligence but are concerned that no significant changes have been put forward on traceability, cooperation with third countries, and chain of custody.

The Council has maintained the Commission's proposal to require traceability to plot information for all volumes sourced by operators. Even if some farmers in producing countries can comply with this requirement, collecting geolocation data of smallholders and co-operatives faces important technical, logistical, legal, and governance challenges, which cannot be addressed by companies alone. If such challenges are not solved under a multi-stakeholder approach involving local governments, local industry actors, EU operators, the European Commission, and NGOs, companies will not be able to collect reliable geolocation to plot information for the majority of smallholders currently part of their supply chains.

To support rapid implementation and provide equivalent assurances, they call for traceability to production area, to be checked by satellite monitoring and checks on the ground as part of an operator's due diligence. They also strongly urge the Commission to tackle the abovementioned challenges through Forest Partnerships, development assistance, and any other required means before implementing and enforcing the geolocation to plot requirement of the Regulation.

Given that compliance with certain requirements of the Regulation will prove challenging for some actors in producing countries, they are concerned that the chapter on cooperation with third countries was not strengthened by the Council in order to address those challenges. To avoid the exclusion of a large portion of producers from supply chains into the EU as well as any shortages in the provision of relevant commodities, targeted cooperation and development assistance, as well as financial incentives, will be required to enable the establishment of national traceability systems, proper land tenure regulation, deforestation-prevention through capacity and knowledge building for environmentally and economically sustainable and deforestation-free agriculture, and much more.

While the Commission's Proposal does not explicitly refer to the required chain of custody for delivering deforestation-free products, its inclusion of 'risk of mixing with products of unknown origin or produced in areas where deforestation or forest degradation has occurred or is occurring' as part of an operator's risk assessment presupposes that deforestation-free products cannot be physically mixed with products which have not been verified as 'deforestation-free'.

Requesting a separation of flows of verified and non-verified products throughout all supply chain stages, will have a disruptive, trade distorting effect on global soy supply chains to the EU while undermining deforestation-free commitments and efforts already undertaken in high-risk areas. It would require building new infrastructure (country elevators, silos, crushing lines or plants, port loading) at such prohibitive costs that operators in most large ports are likely to abstain from the investment. As a result, supply flows into the EU are expected to be considerably reduced and to switch from high risk to low risk areas, abandoning all positive engagement and incentives to farmers to halt deforestation.

Mass balance to date has supported demand for deforestation-free production in high-risk areas and therefore incentivised the halting of deforestation.

COCERALFEDIOL, and FEFAC stand ready to provide any additional information and examples from practical experience to support the Council and European Parliament in their negotiations of the Deforestation Regulation with a view to ensure deforestation-free supplies in Europe and to continue effective action against deforestation in producer countries.

Cermaq equips all sites with forecasting tool

Ocean analytics provider Scoot Science is now operating forecasting platform SeaState across 26 of Cermaq's sites in Canada, it announced in a recent press release.

By connecting sensor data with ocean and weather models, SeaState is able to provide fish farmers with all the necessary information they need, including any early warnings of fish welfare. It includes the Scoot Integrated Welfare Index (SIWI) which takes into account health risks such as oxygen, mortality, lice to provide farmers with a comprehensive answer about how their fish are doing.

"SeaState has the power to change the way ocean-based salmon farming operates. Our tools increase survivability, profitability, and sustainability of salmon farms anywhere in the world," explains Dr Jonathan LaRiviera, Scoot Co-Founder and CEO. "We're collaborating with Cermaq to expand our ocean intelligence toolset to their specific needs. This is the approach we take with all of our clients."


Cermaq has access to data related to temperature, salinity and oxygen levels across its 26 sites. This is alongside publicly available data which produces forecasts of regional and site-specific ocean conditions. Ocean conditions are constantly fluctuating and as a result, are updated four times a day in order to give farmers adequate warning to improve welfare, ensure survivability and operate more profitably.

Thanks to the flexibility of SeaState, farms are able to adopt sensor technologies and integrate them with systems that have been operating onsite for years. As the 'backbone' of forecasting and analytics, farmers are given actionable intelligence to assist with decision making.
