21/01/2016: Study: Global fish catches much higher than previously thought

Until now, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation has often been considered the place to go for reliable figures about just how much of the planet's resources we have been using.

A paper published in Nature on Tuesday would appear to call such a view into question. A ten-year study taking into account such things as sport and unregulated fishing has reconstructed data that look truly terrifying. If these data are correct, our true catch size has been fifty percent greater than the FAO's figure.
