07/06/2013: Babies who eat fish less likely to develop allergies; QR codes on sushi; cleaning up fish farms

According to new research, babies who are regularly fed fish in their first year of life are much less likely to develop common allergies when they get older.

Scientists have found that many of the children that ate plenty of fish early in life were much more likely to be allergy free in later life.

Harney Sushi in San Diego have launched edible QR codes to accompany their sushi dishes.

When scanned with a smart phone or tablet, users are taken to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) FishWatch website, where they can learn about the sustainability of the seafood they are consuming.


Canadian researcher, Thierry Chopin, is developing a less expensive technology that could be used to clean up the many fish farms that are already operating in coastal waters. 

His approach involves creating a whole ecosystem around a fish farm, so the waste generated by the farmed fish gets taken up by other valuable seafood commodities, like shellfish and kelp.
