01/08/2017: Icelandic Fisheries Conference 2017 – Fish Waste For Profit

Iceland’s leading conference exploring the uses for discarded fish processing by-products, Fish Waste for Profit, will take place alongside the well-known Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition on 14 September this year

Now in its second edition, the conference will this time explore the fish waste pyramid of value, highlighting the various innovative uses that are making by-product reutilisation a viable method of increasing profits.

Supporters of this year’s conference include the Iceland Ocean Cluster and the US based New England Ocean Cluster; both of which aim to foster growth and investment within the sustainable fisheries sector.

The Iceland Ocean Cluster are strong advocates of the by-product reutilisation movement and dedicate their time to ensuring that fisheries across the world know that this industry is not hypothetical.

“It is very real. The Icelandic model has proved reliable and this model can be duplicated in seafood industries all around; creating new opportunities in coastal areas” comments conference chairman, Thor Sigfusson.

This international, one-day conference is aimed at companies involved in the commercial fishing, aquaculture and processing sector. Fish Waste for Profit focuses on how to maximise your return on investment from seafood products and will deliver topical seminars from world leaders in by-product reutilisation in Iceland.

The conference will also address the issues and techniques involved in the reutilisation of potentially discarded parts of the catch that can be turned into high value products for non-food sectors. With an estimated 43 percent of fish and shellfish resources ending up as wastage, innovators are converting once discarded parts of the fish into desirable products and income; from shoes, belts, wallets, and medical devices to supplements, face creams and biodiesel.

Fish Waste for Profit will welcome attendees from all over the globe in search of more information and industry contacts in the waste reuse sector. The conference offers the opportunity for unsurpassed networking with key industry stakeholders.

Coffee and lunch breaks provide the perfect opportunity for those who attend the conference to continue the discussion outside of the conference room. The Icelandic Fisheries Conference represents a unique setting in which to connect with pioneers in the fish processing by-product reutilisation sector.

Entrance to the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition is included in the conference delegate fee and should not be missed. Providing an exclusive opportunity to attend both events. The successful Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition has seen visitor numbers increase year on year since its inception in 1984, last year welcoming over 15,000 individuals.

The conference, in contrast, welcomes a much smaller, more intimate group of professionals from the commercial processing, aquaculture and fisheries sectors. Chaired by Thor Sigfusson of the Iceland Ocean Cluster.

The conference will include the following sessions:

• Large scale processing of fish by-products
• Niche products
• High value products, high intensity processes
• Fish Waste: A big business

The Icelandic Fisheries Conference, Fish Waste for Profit, runs on the 14 September.
