13/01/14: Aquaculture centre opens in Singapore; Endangered fish species saved?; St Kitts expands aquaculture sector

Republic Polytechnic, an institution located in Singapore, Southeast Asia recently opened a new aquaculture centre, the first of its kind at a polytechnic. 

Known as the 'Aquaria', the centre is a technologically-advanced learning facility that offers the means to conduct research in outdoor and indoor laboratories. The centre will also support research in marine science and aquaculture technologies, helping the in the country's goal to boost local food fish production.

Back in March 2013, a worldwide appeal to find a female mate for the critically-endangered fish species Mangarahara cichli was launched. 

Aquarists at London Zoo, UK recently announced the success of the appeal after a small population of the species was found in remote Madagascar.

Speaking to the St Kitts and Nevis Observer, Nigel Carty, the country's agriculture minister reported that the west indies will continue to diversify its agro-sector with a greater focus on aquaculture. 

“One of the areas that we are now beginning to focus on is aquaculture. It is new for us,” he told reporters.
