Taiwan's Fisheries Agency says that Taiwan has taken measures to increase tilapia production in the country and counter a South Korean news program that casts the country's tilapia industry in a negative light.
Fisheries Agency deputy director-general Tsay Tzu-yaw says, the Taiwan Tilapia Alliance has decided to speak up for domestic tilapia farmers and their industry and be responsible for international promotions in future.
The alliance plans to "produce films to introduce Taiwan's high-quality tilapia production industry" and hold a press conference in South Korea to promote Taiwan's tilapia and help improve the image of the industry, Tsay said.
This follows the portrayal of tilapia farms in Taiwan existing in polluted environments and suggesting that Taiwanese farmers were misusing antibiotics in raising the fish. South Korean importers suspended imports of tilapia following the broadcast.
