8/11/13: Typhoon Haiyan, Nigeria aquaculture expansion, BC salmon head steps down

Super Typhoon Haiyan is currently lashing the Philippines with heavy rain, lightning and 200 mph winds. Although no news about the true extent of the damage is available yet, the cost to the livelihoods of the Asian archipelago’s quarter of a million fish farmers is likely to be considerable.

The Nigerian government is in the midst of an ambitious project to build 960 aquaculture ponds to supply the fish demands of capital city Abuja. Currently 240 have been completed, and Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development Olvadi Madayi has indicated that at full capacity, the project will provide 250 jobs for local fish farmers.

Mary Ellen Walling will be leaving her role as executive director of the British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association, Canada. She highlighted the many changes for the better among Canadian salmon farmers since she joined in 2002, including regulatory shifts, active participation in government hearings on sustainable aquaculture, and the association’s first major television advertising campaign.
