30/09/2015: Xelect at AquaNor 2015

Xelect Ltd, a Scotland-based aquaculture genetics company, had a busy and productive visit to Trondheim, Norway, for AquaNor 2015, where they hosted a stand for the second time. There was a real sense of energy and exciting business opportunity across the aquaculture industry.

Image: Andy Leppard
Xelect attracted considerable interest in their groundbreaking new markers for increased muscle fibre number in Atlantic salmon. Following some very successful evaluations this year they are now in discussions with several major breeding companies with a view to bringing selected lines into production in the near future.

Xelect had an encouraging number of inquiries for their gene expression service, mostly from large feed companies who use qPCR to evaluate the biological effects of diet formulations.

There can be no doubt that genetic analysis is becoming a routine part of the aquaculture cycle across a wide range of species, and is no longer the preserve of large companies and high value species. Having spoken with several new-start hatchery operations and various smaller producers it is clear that Xelect will be able to provide valuable assistance with breeding programme management and stock selection to a wide range of businesses across the industry.

30/09/2015: Dutch retailers promote certified seafood for Think Fish Week

The Think Fish campaign in the Netherlands took place all last week. Many events happened across the country to help Dutch consumers understand the importance of sustainably caught or responsibly farmed seafood.

Certified seafood is becoming increasingly popular across the Netherlands. The share of fish that carries the MSC (sustainably caught) or ASC (responsibly farmed) logo bought by households is growing. Researchers GFK found that families with children and pensioners together eat 35 per cent of all sustainably or responsibly produced fish that is sold. Most of their certified purchases come from Albert Heijn, Lidl and Aldi.

http://www.asc-aqua.org/index.cfm?lng=1
Image: Shawn Campbell
The most popular fish species chosen are herring, salmon, pollock, pangasius and tilapia. Herring, with a 25 percent share of consumption, is the most popular sustainably caught fish, with fish fingers accounting for a 17 percent share. Pangasius and tilapia are the most popular responsibly farmed fish bought, with salmon and shrimp catching up rapidly. Sustainable fish is most commonly eaten in South-Holland, North-Brabant and North-Holland. In Flevoland, proportionately, the lowest amount of sustainable fish is eaten. Supermarkets in the Netherlands aim to only sell certified fish from 2016 onward.

Think Fish Week
Think Fish Week was set up by the World Wildlife Fund, Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council. Supermarket chains, fishmongers, caterers, fish suppliers and well-known fish product brands joined these three organisations to support the initiative.

The campaign aims to help consumers understand the importance of eating sustainably caught or responsibly farmed fish to help maintain healthy fish stocks, protect vulnerable coastal areas and ensure there is a responsible supply of fish for future generations.

During Think Fish Week consumers can easily discover the wide range of MSC and ASC certified seafood, where they can buy it and how to prepare delicious meals with it.

30/09/2015: Scotland to host Aquaculture Europe 2016

The Board of Directors of the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) are pleased to announce that Aquaculture Europe 2016 will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland.

AE2016 will feature a scientific conference, an international trade event, special sessions for aquaculture producers and satellite workshops and events.

The EAS 2012-2014 President, Kjell Maroni expressed the satisfaction of the Board of Directors, with “…a very strong proposal that mixed well the attributes of Edinburgh, the status and potential of aquaculture and blue biotechnology in Scotland and the strong support of the Scottish Government for this event”.

http://www.easonline.org/images/stories/Meetings/AE2016/AE%202016%20flyer%202%20page.pdf

He also commented that bids for AE events organised by EAS come from members that mobilise the main stakeholders in that country to host it.

“This is the first Aquaculture Europe event ever to take place in the UK and in Scotland in particular and we are very happy with the proposed theme on blue biotechnology, coming 10 years after a very successful AE event in Barcelona on the same theme. Our partners in Scotland will be able to mobilise the sector there and beyond and we are sure that AE2016 will be very well attended – both for its content and for its location”.

Scotland’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Paul Wheelhouse added: “Scotland is world renowned for high quality and healthy farmed fish and shellfish products – and highly recognised for best practice in aquaculture, and our innovation and development of new technologies.”

“The Scottish Government fully supports the sustainable growth of the sector with due regard to the marine environment – and I am delighted that Scotland will be able to welcome the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) Conference and Trade Show to Edinburgh in 2016.”

Aquaculture Europe 2016 will take place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) at the end of September.

29/09/2015: Tilapia: adaptable from fingerling to fillet

http://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1504_w1/50

First published in International Aquafeed, July-August 2015

Originating from the lakes of Eastern, Central and Western Africa, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was first introduced to developing countries as a cheap, easy way for subsistence farmers to provide their families with enough protein. With improved production techniques and methods of controlling its flavour, the fish became more of a mainstream product. Communities of migrants from these countries then created a market for tilapia in the developed nations they had moved to, and finally a taste for the fish spread amongst the locals.

With a mild, unintrusive flavour, Nile tilapia lends itself readily to a wide range of dishes and cuisines. It’s pretty adaptable from the farmer’s point of view, too. Omnivorous yet predominantly vegetarian, tilapia grow quickly on a diet lower in protein and higher in carbohydrates than that required by many carnivorous farmed species. They are also relatively resistant to disease and poor water quality, and they breed easily.

Keeping mixed-gender groups in ponds can result in lots of stunted offspring competing for food and space. There are two main ways to fix this. You could try sex-reversal. Administering hormones in their feed at an early stage ensures the fish all grow up as males. This has an added benefit, owing to the fact that males of this species grow twice as fast as females.

Alternatively, you could continue to raise them in mixed-gender groups, but in cages. Nile tilapia need a bowl-like depression in a sandy substrate in which to fertilise their eggs and from which to gather them up in their mouths to brood them. In a cage, even if any eggs do get fertilised, they will simply fall through the mesh and be lost. Being both easier and cheaper than sex-reversal, the cage method is employed across China, Indonesia and much of Central and South America.

29/09/2015: North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation enhances the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems

The European Commission welcomes the decisions during the 37th annual meeting of NAFO (North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation, 21-25 September 2015, Halifax, Canada), which contain a strong commitment of its Contracting Parties to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, by adopting Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for a number of stocks taking due account of scientific advice and by taking further measures to improve the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

NAFO has also decided to continue working towards the improvement of the data base for stock assessments, the development and review of risk based management strategies, and the implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. In regard to control and compliance, NAFO adopted measures based on EU proposals that will favour transparency in fishing activities.

http://ec.europa.eu/fisheries/index_en.htm
Image: LASZLO ILYES
Important progress has also been achieved as regards the information exchange between Canadian authorities and the NAFO Secretariat to ensure smooth co-existence between hydrocarbon and fishing activities, notably in view of the increasing oil and gas exploratory activities in the NAFO Regulatory Area.

However, despite overwhelming support by many Contracting Parties there was no progress in the attempt to align NAFO port inspection rules with the FAO Port State Measures Agreement, a crucial tool in fighting IUU fishing.

The EU has also presented a proposal to update the existing shark management rules in line with the EU ban on shark finning. Whereas only few sharks are caught in the NAFO area, the EU continuously supports initiatives across Regional Fisheries Management Organisations to end this practice worldwide. The proposal was supported by many delegations, including the US; however NAFO did not manage to adopt the fins-naturally-attached policy this year.

The 38th NAFO Annual Meeting will be held in Varadero, Cuba, from 19 –23 September 2016.

Background
NAFO is an intergovernmental fisheries science and management body which seeks to contribute to the rational management and conservation of the fishery resources of its Convention Area. Currently NAFO has 12 Members from North America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, including the EU, France (with respect to St. Pierre et Miquelon), Denmark (with respect to the Faroe Islands and Greenland), the USA, and Canada.

29/09/2015: Could we soon be wearing sustainable pearls?

In a world first, the Australian Pearl Producers Association (PPA) has entered the Australia pearl oyster fishery to be assessed against the MSC's standard for sustainable fishing. If the fishery achieves certification it could influence the global pearl industry, feeding a growing demand for sustainable options that go beyond just what we eat.

The fishery turns around AUS$60 - 80 million per year and is the second most valuable fishery in Western Australia, contributing a significant amount to the country’s economy.

https://www.msc.org/
Image: Rebecca Wilson
Executive Officer of PPA, Aaron Irving is delighted with this game-changing move.

"People care about sustainability and healthy bountiful oceans and hopefully, if we achieve certification, they’ll be able to wear that sustainability with the world’s first MSC certified pearls," he says.

The entrance of the pearl fishery comes as a result of growing market demand for certified sustainable jewellery. The pearl fishery, located in the waters of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, produces pearls, pearl oyster meat and mother of pearl shell products.

MSC Asia Pacific Director, Patrick Caleo, welcomes the fishery’s decision to enter assessment against the MSC Fisheries Standard:

"We always think of seafood when we think of fishing, but here we have a fishery that could change how we think of fishing, sustainability and the different ways we can look after our ocean,"

"There’s a growing number of people who want do good by their oceans but also want to look good. If certified, the pearl fishery will allow that discerning customer to not only eat sustainable seafood but also wear jewellery that has positive impacts on our oceans."

Independent certification body SCS Global Services will carry out this assessment over a 12-18 month period. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide input throughout the process. To comment on the assessment of this fishery, please contact: SDaume@scsglobalservices.com

29/09/2015: Bill Herzig honoured with GAA Lifetime Achievement Award

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) is proud to announce that Bill Herzig is the recipient of this year’s GAA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Herzig will accept the award during GAA’s GOAL 2015 conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on Thursday, October 29.

A champion of seafood sustainability, Mr Herzig’s career in seafood spans more than four decades. After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Mr Herzig took a job with Rich-SeaPak, working his way up to senior vice president of operations, procurement, quality assurance and commodity sales over his 23-year career at the St Simons, Georgia, seafood company.

Mr Herzig joined Orlando, Florida-based Darden Restaurants, the world’s largest casual dining company, as director of seafood purchasing in 1997, graduating to VP of seafood purchasing two years later. He worked his way up to senior VP of purchasing and supply-chain innovation, responsible for all purchasing across the 2000-restaurant chain, before transitioning over to president of Darden Aquafarms, an integrated lobster aquaculture facility in Malaysia.

http://gaalliance.org/

Along with GAA President George Chamberlain, Mr Herzig was instrumental in the formation of GAA in 1997. At the time, aquaculture, particularly shrimp farming, was under attack from environmental interests, spreading misinformation on mangrove deforestation. As a result, stakeholders from 12 countries established GAA as a non-profit organisation, based upon a shared vision that aquaculture is vital to feed the world, but that it must grow in a coordinated and responsible fashion. That vision led to the creation of the Global Aquaculture Advocate magazine, the GOAL (Global Outlook on Aquaculture Leadership) conference and the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) third-party certification program.

“This is the most satisfying thing that I have ever been involved in. We did it because it was the right thing to do, and so many have joined the cause,” said Mr Herzig.

“As a result, the aquaculture industry now has the fundamentals in place to achieve the vision laid out three decades ago in the Blue Revolution.”

“From the very beginning, Bill Herzig has passionately and unselfishly devoted himself to GAA. The organisation would not exist today were it not for him,” said Chamberlain.

“With his astute judgment, broad influence, business skills and leadership by example, he pulled us back from the brink of bankruptcy, guided us decisively through contentious issues, and marshalled a strong network of long-term supporters. Bill never asked for, nor allowed, proper recognition for his efforts. He worked his miracles quietly and unselfishly, like the silent hand of an angel.”

“Bill Herzig and I have worked together in the seafood industry for more than 40 years, principally at the business operations level. His forward thinking has led to innovation within every company, and his involvement in pre-competitive activities at GAA and NFI has benefited the entire global seafood community,” said GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens.

“Bill is known as a change-management leader, which is again exemplified by his current role with the development of lobster aquaculture in Malaysia.”

Currently, Mr Herzig is president of Sustainable Strategies and Initiatives. In addition to GAA, he has been involved with the National Fisheries Institute.

About GAA
The Global Aquaculture Alliance is an international, non-profit trade association dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. Through the development of its Best Aquaculture Practices certification standards, GAA has become the leading standards-setting organisation for aquaculture seafood.

Nairobi is warm as we drive through Westlands, into the City Centre and then down to Thika Superhighway, Rachel Kibui writes in Kenya's Daily Nation.

The day before making the trip last week, we had been informed that the weather would be cold, but as we drove, we realised how tough the job of the weatherman is.

The weather has become extremely fickle, and many farmers are on the receiving end.

About 20km down the superhighway, we branch off to the Eastern bypass and then later onto Kangundo Road to Ruai, a sprawling suburb that has become a real estate hub.

Ruai is dry and dusty, perhaps why real estate is taking precedence in the area. We are in the fast-growing district to meet Domiciano Maingi, a fish farmer.

Dressed in a white shirt emblazoned with tilapia and catfish, one may not immediately notice how symbolic the shirt is to him, until they reach his Fish Paradise Farm.

4 - 5 August 2016, Phnom Penh Hotel, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia is home to some of the world’s most intensive freshwater fisheries. The 2.6 million tonnes of fish caught annually in the Mekong basin represent seven times more than the catch of North American inland fisheries and more than 10 times the entire fish catch in Australia.

Fish production in Cambodia is three times as big as the country’s pig production and 20 times bigger than its chicken production. Most Cambodians rely on fish as a source of affordable protein.

28/09/2015: E-conference: ‘Utilisation of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed’ 1-30 October 2015

Approximately 1.3-1.6 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year, which is estimated to have enormous environmental (about 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emission/year, 305 cubic km water/year, 1.5 billion ha land to grow food that is wasted), social (US$936 billion) and economic (US$1055 billion) costs.

Also such food loss and waste has an impact on food security, natural resource availability, and local and national economies. FAO through the 'Save Food' initiative is working with partners to develop, plan and implement initiatives for efficient use of resources and harmonisation of methodologies, strategies and approaches.

http://www.fao.org/home/en/
Image: US Department of Agriculture
Globally many plant resources are being used either as food or as animal feed. This dual-purpose use raises questions how to consider a change of utilisation of plant resources from food to animal feed within the context of food losses and waste. Similarly if food gets lost or wasted a part of these losses can be converted to animal feed.

FAO is in the process of developing a framework and an action plan on ‘Food Loss and Waste plus Non-Food Parts to Livestock Feed’ with the objective to develop criteria for setting the boundaries between dual purpose use and food loss, and to enhance animal feed availability without compromising animal health and welfare and animal product safety and quality, and meeting legislative requirements.

The aim of the e-conference is to seek guidance on:
a) the aims, scope and boundaries of the framework;
b) implementation of the framework, and
c) role of different stakeholders, from academia, feed and food industries, civil societies, policy makers, extension workers to farmers in the implementation.

How to join
The e-conference is open to all persons interested in the topic, is free (there is no registration fee) and will be moderated.

To join the e-mail conference, send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.fao.org leaving the subject blank and entering the following text:

subscribe FAO-FoodLoss2AnimalFeed-L

After you have sent the email, you will get an email containing a link. You need to click on the link to complete your subscription.

What next
On 15th September 2015 a ‘Background Document’ was posted containing a draft framework and an action plan on ‘Food Loss and Waste plus Non-Food Parts to Livestock Feed’. It will set the scene for this e-conference. It will also provide information on how the conference will be run and how you can send your contribution.

It may please be noted that the Background Document and contributions from participants will be available only to those who have joined the e-conference by subscribing to the FAO-FoodLoss2AnimalFeed-L list by following the procedure given above. 25/09/2015: The International Aquafeed team visits Dr Eckel

http://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1504_w1/48
First published in International Aquafeed, July-August 2015

International Aquafeed magazine visited Dr Eckel GmbH on-site on Friday 12th June. Founder and Managing Director of the feed additive company, Dr Antje Eckel welcomed the team and gave a guided tour of the Dr Eckel site.

Dr Antje founded Dr Eckel GmbH in 1994 from humble beginnings in her own home. She has built up the business ever since then, remaining as the sole shareholder. In 2003 the offices were built, then in 2005 a warehouse was erected for stocking products. In 2009 production began and in 2014 the offices were expanded with an additional floor and outhouse on the current site in Niederzissen.

All Dr Eckel’s own-brand products are produced on this single site and exported to customers all around the world. By the offices there is a pond with much plant life and bird life too – even ducks visit. A legacy of the development is a former wooden prefabricated office. It now fulfils a great role for on-site seminars and meetings with customers, distributors and Dr Eckel staff.
