30/11/2015: The Aquafeed Interview: Sarena Lin, President, Cargill Feed and Nutrition

First published in International Aquafeed, September-October 2015

One of the biggest buyouts so far this decade, has been the recent acquisition by Cargill of EWOS. This took place in mid-August just prior to one of aquaculture’s largest and most significant events – AquaNor 2015. Negotiations continued into Saturday night, the day before the companies involved headed to Trondheim, Norway, for the bi-annual gathering of the world’s salmon farming industry representatives at the AquaNor 2015 conference and exhibition the following week. Without prior arrangements in place, the companies were able to present their joint agreement, and their commitment to work together for not only the betterment of salmon customers but for the future of all major fish species being farmed for food, to the industry and customers alike.

Ms Sarena Lin, President, Cargill Feed and Nutrition, made the announcement personally at an almost impromptu press conference. International Aquafeed magazine, was in attendance and has taken the opportunity to report here on most of the questions posed to Ms Lin by journalists representing national, regional and world aqua press.

Let me introduce myself. I am the president of Cargill Feed and Nutrition, its absolutely a privilege to be here and to attend this event and to see the interest you all have in this merger. This is a transformative deal. The reason for that is very simple, if you look at Cargill’s feed industry, something you might not realise is that we have been in the feed business for about 100 years of the 150 years of history of Cargill.

And if you think about the knowledge we have developed over the 100 years that started with us being in 37 countries and 17,000 employees with tremendous expertise and knowledge in feed, but most of it in livestock. What we have done though over the last 15-20 years is to enter into the aqua business. Aqua nutrition as we know is one of the fastest growing nutrition sectors in the world. And our involvement in the past has mostly been in warm-water fish such as Tilapia and shrimp.

The reason why EWOS is such a critical partner for us is that we believe this is absolutely the transformative transition we need to have to allow us to really jump start a global presence and harness the technology and skill set that evolved over the years to help us really accelerate the growth in all these other species and all these other markets. That’s the first step and we need to get that done first.

There are other aquaculture feed companies out there, why choose EWOS?
You all know very well that when we talk about aquaculture its not all the same. In aquaculture when you look at species, based on our understanding, salmon is one of the most important species out there; in terms of the requirements from a nutritional perspective, in terms of processing and in terms of transportation. So our belief is, if we want to enter the ‘aqua platform’ in a transformative way why not go for the best? We want to go for the best that we can leverage and transfer that technology. So salmon for us is one of the top choices in terms of being able to build that foundation. To us, this is a no brainer. The cultural fit we had with the EWOS business, their passion and commitment to their customers, the trust they have built and the innovation system they have. We did not see anything like it in all the other companies we looked at.

Now you are moving into the salmon industry, is this a first step for Cargill to move into salmon production, now that seafood is becoming more and more important?
We really need to understand what salmon is about as we know this is a complicated industry. So out first step is, let’s get this deal done, welcome our EWOS friends into the Cargill family and then continue to explore opportunities.

Is vertical integration something you might look at down the road?

Again from our perspective, our first and foremost job is to learn the aquafeed industry and with EWOS’s help to understand what it truly means to be successful in the aquafeed industry. I think that is the first thing we have to learn. Now, obviously, as Cargill Inc. we will always be looking for opportunities for growth, so never say never. However, the practicality is very clear for us in terms of what we need to focus on in the short-term.

In the salmon industry, the feed producers relationships with their users is very close. Do you have that same type of relationship with the users of other livestock feeds you sell? Or are your relationships more at arms length and this is something else you will have to learn?

I think the good news is that in the livestock industry we have very deep relationships with our animal producers. So, no matter what the species, be it dairy, beef or swine especially for the large industrialised producers many of them are our customers we not only deliver feed we also deliver additional service to improve farm management to get better feed efficiency.

But having said that, this is something we are very careful about, we know aqua is a different platform from others; livestock has its own characteristics. Aquaculture is an area we absolutely want to rely on our EWOS colleagues to help us and teach us so we understand the nuances of how to serve customers well and serve them better.

When we talk about feeding nine billion people by 2050, it’s not often thought this will come from the salmon industry, which is seen as a cash crop. With your global reach and the technology and research that has taken place into salmon feed development, how do you see that technology and research being used in the future? Do you feel that can be expanded to other, larger producing species such as Tilapia or Pengasius? Is this on your horizon?
Absolutely, in fact I would say that is exactly the value we see in this partnership. It is that transferability from what EWOS has developed in salmon into these other species to where we see tremendous growth, especially in Asia. From a research point-ofview we are absolutely impressed by Dirdal, EWOS’s research and development centre, and by what EWOS has done in Dirdal. We believe that has to be maintained as a hub for us to deepen our knowledge in aqua. But the job, once we integrate, is how do we take that knowhow and expertise to all these other parts of the world. Remember that there are 37 countries where we already have a strong footprint and where we can go in and use this leverage. This is absolutely in our plan.

30/11/2015: Things to know about marine aquaculture

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3335115/Things-know-marine-aquaculture.html
Image: Tristan Schmurr
Some 90 percent of seafood consumed by Americans is imported, yet the Obama administration's push to expand US marine aquaculture into federal waters has failed to see one offshore farm in operation, nearly two years after the first permit was issued, the Mail Online says.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is pushing for marine aquaculture production in the U.S. to jump by 50 percent by 2020. The federal agency says marine aquaculture is vital to relieving the pressure of fishing on oceans, creating coastal jobs and securing the nation's food supply.

30/11/2015: Welcome to Vakkom

Mrs Geeji Madathil Tharanath, President, Organic Life (OL), a young and energetic NGO organisation based in Thiruvnanthapuram, Kerala commented on signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Aquaculture withoutFrontiers (AwF), “We are wishing to develop long term cooperative relations with international technical experts on aquaculture and especially to develop cultural and social interchange through mutual assistance in the areas of agri/aqua foods education, training and research so we are delighted about today’s activity.”

Vakkom is a small coastal village located at Thiruvananthapuram District, the capital of Kerala State in south western India. Three sides of the village are surrounded by the backwaters of Anchuthengu which is connected to Arabian Sea through the estuary. The lake receives an excellent daily exchange from tidal waters from the sea and has enormous potential for aquaculture if planned well. Vakkom has a population of around 18,000 people, with approximately 55 percent females.

http://www.aquaculturewithoutfrontiers.org/

Geeji said “Whilst the village has a great tradition of art and culture it had relied heavily on Coconut as its major income and activity. The village has been popular for the production of high quality coir since the 18th century and consequently was the major source of livelihood of the people. Hundreds of small ponds were constructed adjacent to the backwater for the purpose of soaking (retting) the coconut husk. The majority of the workers related to the coir industry were women.

"In recent years, the coir industry has been overtaken by plastic alternatives – the market door became open when there was the unavailability of the raw material, a hike in the production costs and subsequent reduced market demand. This has created a crisis for Vakkom and has made many people jobless and their families are in distress because of reduced income levels. Being far away from the urban area, Vakkom finds it difficult to attract other new industries so today this once proud villages economy is in poverty and can only be revamped only through serious interventions.”

http://www.aquaculturewithoutfrontiers.org/

Roy Palmer, AwF’s Executive Director, said “We are excited about linking with OL and specifically in the area of empowerment of unemployed local women of Vakkom Panchayath through aquaculture intervention. The present project aims at achieving a sustainable livelihood for the economically challenged women community in Vakkom through aquaculture thus improving the future for all families in the community. It was excellent to have so many people from the village plus Dr Saju M.S, Deputy Director of Fisheries; Dr Baiju Ramachandran, Director, Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Shri Venuji, President, Vakkom Panchayath and OL’s Renjith Rengaraju present and discussing the opportunities with the community at the signing. We are also very grateful for introduction to OL by Dr Kaippilly Dinesh, who was also on hand to assist with translation.”

AwF Volunteer Dr Janine Pierce (University of South Australia), present to add value to the project through visual demonstration techniques, commented that introduction of sustainable aquaculture as an alternative income source to replace the dying coir industry and/or to supplement fishing could provide jobs, income and improved lives to the local community. Janine, based on many years of knowledge and experience, found these positive results occurred after aquaculture was introduced in Vietnam, China and Australia.

30/11/2015: Nutriad Aqua Division signs on health expert

http://www.nutriad.com/
Maria Mercè Isern i Subich
Global producer of feed additive solutions Nutriad is further strengthening its aqua division, as it announced the appointment of Maria Mercè Isern i Subich, DVM, as Business Development Manager Aquaculture Health. Mrs Subich holds a Degree in Veterinary Medicine and has occupied various positions with fish farms and feed manufacturers.

“This recent incorporation of an aquaculture veterinary with over 10 years of farm experience complements our existing scientific and technical capabilities to support our customers in the key aquaculture markets in Asia, Europe and America”, says Dr Peter Coutteau, Business Unit Manager Aquaculture for Nutriad.

“The aquafeed industry is expanding extremely fast and maturing from a young, pioneering industry into a more professional feed industry. The degree of technical development is extremely different among the distinct species and regions. Salmon is surely the most industrialized aquaculture species, whereas production of shrimp, tilapia, carp and catfish is still under full development and consolidation. However, health prevention has become a key issue for all aquaculture species, increasingly plagued by a diversity of diseases and parasites."

Stated Mrs Subich: “I am excited to join Nutriad and work on further strengthening the product portfolio and services that the company offers to both feedmills as well as integrated farmers.”

26/11/2015: Event review: Aqua Nor 18-21.05.15 Trondheim, Norway

http://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1505_w1/58
by Peter Parker, International Aquafeed Magazine

First published in International Aquafeed, September-October 2015

Trondheim is a great location for hosting Aqua Nor, with an excellent harbour, it is situated where the river Nidelva meets the Trondheimsfjorden, Norway’s third longest fjord at 130km in length.

Locals suggested that Trondheim typically operates with a population of 120,000 in the city centre, this is then flooded with an extra 20,000 people for the week of Aqua Nor, a pressing but healthy figure which seems to be welcomed by the service people of the city.

With my colleagues Darren Parris and Tom Blacker, we visited the four-day exhibition to meet with friends, colleagues and clients.

International attraction
There were visitors representing 76 nations this time around, 20,848 people, a ten percent increase on Aqua Nor 2013. Those in attendance ranged from university students interested to learn what aquaculture was, through to foreign delegates under the leadership of government ministers and many in between.

Business people, fishermen, scientists, enthusiasts, journalists and entrepreneurs; there was something at Aqua Nor for all who attended. Whether this is to develop personal and business networks at all levels, to promote or purchase a product, to learn about Norwegian aquaculture, or to share about foreign aquaculture.

Arrival at Aqua Nor

The image when we arrived at the event on the first morning - Tuesday, August 18 - was that of formally suited people outside the foyer, huddled in groups. A large Aqua Nor logo above the three double doors, queues of people within.

On a black stage to the left of the entrance was a large block of ice, which would later be sculpted into a magnificent piece by chainsaw. To the left of the stage was a large marquee, where stood a decorated stage upon which the welcoming ceremony would soon begin.

Welcome ceremony – official opening of Aqua Nor 2015
People who had come from all over with different hopes for the event had occupied seats in the marquee; for example, to my left was the Director General of Fisheries Malaysia with whom I had a discussion about aquaculture production in Malaysia, and to my right was an aquaculture journalist from Scotland – an excellent environment for meeting new people with similar interests.

Liv Holmefjord, the chairwoman of Nor-Fishing Foundation, organiser of Aqua Nor and Norwegian Director of Fisheries was first on stage to welcome guests and direct the proceedings of the ceremony. After outlining what we had in store for the ceremony she welcomed to the stage two musicians. The two gentlemen occupied the stage, a pianist and a singer, they performed a beautiful and emotive song titled 'Bring him home.'

Ms Holmefjord returned to the stage to tell of the progress Aqua Nor has made over the years, stating that it first began in 1979, there were 18 stands, 23 exhibitors and around 100 visitors – the expansion since then has been vast, with more to come.

26/11/2015: MSC certified Pharma Marine launches sustainably sourced CodMarine Oil in North America

Norway’s Pharma Marine AS, a leader in the production of premium quality fish oils and omega-3 concepts, and Healthy Directions, a direct-to-consumer nutritional supplement retailer and wholly-owned subsidiary of Helen of Troy Limited, have launched the sustainably sourced supplement, Dr Williams CodMarine® Oil, for the first time in North America. The omega-3 sources in the oil product are fully traceable to sustainable and well-managed Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fisheries. The MSC is the world’s most recognised certification program for sustainable, wild-caught seafood.

Pharma Marine’s CodMarine Omega-3 Fish Oil
MSC certification underscores Pharma Marine’s core values of caring for natural resources and people in a responsible and sustainable manner and supporting healthy oceans. Based on the west coast of Norway near a region where marine oil production dates back more than 130 years, Pharma Marine, an innovator in marine lipids, recently expanded its technologically advanced facility to enable the increased production of premium quality EPA and DHA products from fresh or frozen wild-caught fish. Pharma Marine’s sustainably sourced fish oil product, CodMarine, is traceable to MSC certified fisheries including North East Arctic cod, haddock and saithe.

Leif Kjetil Gjendemsjo, owner of Pharma Marine, said, "We are proud to introduce our sustainably sourced CodMarine product to the U.S. market and help consumers to make a difference and contribute to the health of the world’s oceans. The blue MSC ecolabel on each bottle provides assurance that there is complete traceability of CodMarine fish oil to sustainable and well-managed fisheries."

Healthy Directions
Pharma Marine’s CodMarine Omega-3 Fish Oil is available in the US through Healthy Directions’ Dr Williams brand. In line with Healthy Directions’ mission of helping people to lead healthier lives through the core values of responsibility, integrity, and continuous innovation, Dr Williams has added CodMarine Oil to his product line to offer a sustainable omega-3 fish oil solution to his customers. The expanded line of sustainably sourced supplements offers options to support cardiovascular and other health benefits.

Connie Hallquist, President of Healthy Directions, said, "We are pleased to offer Dr Williams’ CodMarine Oil to the U.S. market as we work to ensure we are providing innovative and sustainable solutions for consumers. The blue MSC ecolabel enables consumers to make a difference by choosing fish oil that can be traced back to a sustainable fishery."

MSC certification ensures traceability
The MSC maintains two global standards, one for evaluating the sustainability of fisheries and one for ensuring that seafood products carrying the blue MSC ecolabel are traceable to MSC certified fisheries. To ensure traceability through every step in the chain, Pharma Marine earned MSC Chain of Custody certification, which provides assurance that MSC certified seafood is not mixed with or substituted for non-certified seafood. MSC certification also ensures that seafood products that bear the blue MSC ecolabel can be traced back to a fishery that has been certified as sustainable and well managed against the global, science based MSC Fishery Standard.

"We congratulate Healthy Directions and Pharma Marine on the introduction of the sustainably sourced CodMarine fish oil supplement product to the US market," said Michael Griff, MSC senior commercial manager, Americas.

"By looking for and choosing the blue MSC ecolabel, consumers are able to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for this and future generations."

26/11/2015: Mycotoxin UK & Ireland wheat survey 2015

Mycotoxins are highly toxic secondary metabolic products of moulds. Mycotoxin producing moulds damage crops and can cause great economic losses at all levels of food and feed production. Moreover, many of the mycotoxins impair health, cause diseases and may even result in death in humans and animals when contaminated food or feed products are consumed.

The 2015 Nutriad Mycotoxin Survey covers 66 samples from all over Great Britain and Ireland. More than 460 analyses were conducted to test for the occurrence of the seven mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities intended for animal production. The survey provides an insight into the incidences of aflatoxins (Afla), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, fumonisin B1 (FB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) across all regions of the UK and Ireland. All analysed samples were wheat.

www.nutriad.com
Fusarium head blight in 2015 UK wheat harvest
Typically levels of DON and zearalenone tend to be lower in northern England and Scotland, moderate in western England, Wales and Ireland and highest in southern and south-eastern England. All samples (66) were collected almost immediately after the harvest and the probability that some storage mycotoxins will have developed (OTA) was low. Wheat samples were sampled directly from farms or animal feed production sites.

Sample providers were advised to follow the principles of good sampling (Richard, 2000). However, analytical personnel and/or laboratory staff were not involved in sampling and, therefore, did not influence any part of this procedure. All seven mycotoxins were analysed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC MS/MS). For the purpose of data analysis, non-detection levels were based on the limits of quantification (LOQ) of the test method for each mycotoxin: AfB1 < 0.5 μg/kg; ZEN < 10 μg/kg; DON < 75 μg/kg; FB1 < 125 μg/kg; OTA < 1 μg/kg; T-2 toxin < 4 μg/kg and HT-2 toxin < 4 μg/kg.

The results show that only 4.5 percent of wheat samples were contaminated with DON and none of the samples contained AfB1. Only 3.03 percent of samples contained T-2 toxin and ZEN. The average concentrations of all recovered mycotoxins were low while the highest concentration of DON found reached only 107.14 μg/kg.

Although 12.12 percent of the samples contained HT-2 toxin, a mycotoxin extremely toxic for poultry, its maximum concentration reached only 24.7 μg/kg and this level is negligible. None of the samples were contaminated with OTA or FB1 but this result was expected as it is well known that OTA is a typical storage mycotoxin and FB1 is preferably produced on maize.

www.nutriad.com
Table 1 – Mycotoxin contamination of wheat in UK & Ireland

www.nutriad.com
Table 2 – Percentage of positive samples (>LOQ)
The 2015 Nutriad wheat mycotoxin survey concludes that this year’s harvest of wheat in the UK and Ireland is of very good quality in terms of mycotoxin contamination. Based on the results of this survey conducted immediately post-harvest we believe that this year’s wheat crop may be considered safe for inclusion into finished feed rations for all animal species.

www.nutriad.com
Radka Borutova, Business Development Manager Nutriad
Vigilance is always advisable however, as cereals in animal feeds originate from many sources and some continental European cereals harvested in 2015 have been shown to be contaminated with medium concentrations of mycotoxins. The last possible line of defence is the detoxification of mycotoxins in vivo. The addition of proven mycotoxin deactivators to animal feeds is a very common method to prevent mycotoxicosis and is an effective strategy to keep mycotoxin risk low under any and all conditions.

25/11/2015: Professional planning and successful marketing - Fish International highlights aquaculture, too

Following great success in 2014 Fish International is again putting aquaculture centre-stage in Bremen in 2016. With product presentations, technical discussions, lectures and a workshop, exhibitors and visitors will be looking closely at the latest technologies and developments within the sector. The focus will be on water treatment, energy-efficient operation, high-quality fry, and the right marketing.

http://www.fishinternational.de/en/
From 14 to 16 February 2016 Fish International will bring planners, producers, and farm operators from Germany and Europe together. At the same time Germany’s only trade fair for fish and seafood is a meeting place for producers and traders of high-quality fish products. With GASTRO IVENT and the in-house exhibition of Fleischer Einkauf AG which take place parallel to the Bremen show, the fifteenth edition of the traditional fair underlines its significance as the industry’s meeting place for caterers and restaurateurs, too.

With the renewed focus on aquaculture,
Fish International is responding to visitors’ wishes.
“We know from our visitor survey how important this topic is for the industry”, says Sabine Wedell, Project Manager at Messe Bremen.
And in accordance with visitor interest the event will not only be looking at technological aspects but also cost-effective management and the right marketing.

In both traditional ponds and modern recirculating systems water management is one of the key issues facing the industry.
“Environmental concerns are leading to increasingly harsh requirements not only for us in Europe but in the meantime in China, too”, says Dietmar Firzlaff, who will be at Fish International with his company Aquafuture, representing companies such as the well-known Danish fish farm supplier Billund Aquakulturservice.
How the industry is responding to these developments can be seen in the Bremen exhibition halls: recirculating systems, filter systems, and various water treatment techniques will dominate the exhibits.

These topics will also be addressed by Alexander Rose, Managing Director of water-proved, a company specialised in water monitoring and aquaculture systems: “The event’s international orientation is exciting. German know-how meets Europe-wide expertise in construction and operation of aquaculture facilities.”
Mr Rose and Mr Firzlaff agree: Fish International offers exhibitors and visitors quality not quantity.

“I don’t need hundreds of contacts. Here I meet the very people who are important for me and for whom I am important”, says Mr Firzlaff.

Decisive issues for the planning and financing, construction and operation of aquaculture facilities will be at the centre of a workshop on 15 and 16 February which will take a practical approach to these topics.
Acknowledged experts such as Bjarne Olsen (Billund Aquakulturservice A/S) from Denmark will inform about the basics for a good investment in aquaculture. Government officials will report on authorisation procedures and funding opportunities in Germany.
Other experts such as Stefan Schwabbauer (Filetas Fischgut) and Peter Abel (Forellen Abel) will pass on their knowledge and experiences from their successful marketing of aquaculture products. The workshop will be rounded off by contributions on production efficiency and quality enhancement plus a range of best practice examples, such as for white tiger shrimp.

The Bremerhaven scientist Björn Suckow (ttz Bremerhaven) will be at the fair with the network 'Water and Technology'. The network’s open lectures will offer current information and basic knowledge on efficient water treatment, for example in recirculating systems. Another topic will be choosing the right fry.
“For the economic success of recirculating systems it is decisive to know which high-quality fish species can be used to achieve revenues that cover the costs“, says Suckow, who is involved in one such research project with participants such as the restaurant and retail chain Nordsee and the Alred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research.

Parallel to
Fish International, FAG awaits its customers in Hall 7. In Hall 6, GASTRO IVENT offers ideas and solutions for caterers and restaurateurs. Here visitors will find the latest checkout systems, kitchen fittings, high-quality foods, drinks and much more. Under the title 'Chefs on High Heels' top women chefs will organise tastings. Other major themes are street food and coffee. Just one ticket allows admission to all three shows.
The fish and the gastro fair are open from 10:00-18:00 on Sunday and Monday, and from 10:00-17:00 on Tuesday. The FAG exhibition takes place on Sunday and Monday at the times named above.
