30/10/2015: Secret fish that no one's heard of "most sustainable and tasty"

http://www.cornishman.co.uk/Secret-fish-s-heard-sustainable-tasty/story-28079332-detail/story.html
Image: Herry Lawford
Britain's "most sustainable and tasty fish" is currently one of the South West's most important catches - but no one in the UK has heard of it, The Cornishman reports.

Megrim, the flat fish said to be similar in flavour to the highly-regarded Dover sole and a third of the price, is the latest fish that has seen a dramatic improvement in sustainability levels, according to the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations (NFFO).

Heralded by the NFFO as one of the most sustainable and tasty fish currently being caught by the UK fleet, fishermen can't understand why no one's heard of it.

30/10/2015: Aqua Fisheries Expo 2016 - Exhibitions & Conferences in Myanmar and Cambodia

Myanmar: 28 – 30 September 2016, Myanmar Convention Centre (MCC), Yangon
The seafood sector in Myanmar has a large potential to contribute to food security, employment and economic development. Natural resources are widely available and fisheries are an important source of income and animal protein for the domestic population. Many products, like shrimp, mud crab and sea bass have a large commercial potential in high value markets in the EU and other overseas markets.

After the grand success of our 2nd Aqua Fisheries Myanmar 2015, with 60 exhibitors from China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, USA, Germany, Denmark, Taiwan... attracting more than 3000 visitors from Germany, Denmark, Canada, USA, China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, France, Japan and other countries and regions, we, VEAS are organizing the 3rd edition of Aqua Fisheries 2016 which is going to pump in more value additions to the existing aquaculture and fisheries industry.

http://www.myanmar-aquafisheries.com/

Cambodia:
8 – 9 August 2016, Phnom Penh Hotel, Phnom Penh
Cambodia is home to some of the world’s most intensive freshwater fisheries. The 2.6 million tonnes of fish caught annually in the Mekong basin represent seven times more than the catch of North American inland fisheries and more than 10 times the entire fish catch in Australia. As Cambodia’s population grows, however, the fishing industry is coming increasingly under threat. Moreover, Fish production in Cambodia is three times as big as the country’s pig production and 20 times bigger than its chicken production. Most Cambodians rely on fish as a source of affordable protein.

29/10/2015: Catfish production in India: Present status and prospects

by Dr B Laxmappa, Fisheries Development Officer, Department of Fisheries

First published in International Aquafeed, September-October 2015

Catfish, which is a significant group of the fishes in wetlands, are economically important with a high nutrient value. Catfishes, owing to their unique taste, few bones, are considered a delicacy for the fish consumers, but production of different indigenous catfishes through aquaculture is unexplored in India, although aquaculture contribution of some of the catfish varieties like Ictalurus, Silurus and Clarias spp. has been exemplary in the World scenario.

Catfishes are the second major group of freshwater fishes. India, being a mega-diverse country, harbors 197 catfish species from 52 genera. The Indian families include Amblycipitidae (Torrent catfishes), Akysidae (Stream catfishes), Bagridae (Bagrid catfishes), Chacidae (Square head or angler catfish), Clariidae (Air breathing catfishes), Heteropneustidae (Air-sac catfishes), Olyridae (Long-tail catfishes), Pangasiidae (Shark catfishes), Plotosidae (Eel-tail catfishes), Schilbeidae (Schilbid catfishes), Siluridae (Sheat fishes), Sisoridae (Sisorid catfishes).

http://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1505_w1/18

Present status
Considering the high market demand for catfish and the availability of a huge potential resource in the form of many inland water resources, commercial farming of these species is presently receiving important attention. In India catfish production is coming from both the systems of inland resources i.e. capture and aquaculture.

Capture: The inland water resources of the country are in terms of rivers, estuaries, backwaters and lagoons, reservoirs, floodplain wetlands and upland lakes, which contribute about 1.05 million tonnes of fish annually. The principal rivers of India as Yamuna, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanandi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery including their main tributaries and distributaries harbors about 11.5 percent of the fish fauna so far know in the world. Many of the catfish species start from 15 grams size (Mystus tengara) to very large about 50 kg size (Hemibagrus maydelli) harvested from these water sources in India. And many of the well-known food catfishes are also fine sporting fishes.

Aquaculture: Ponds and tanks are the prime resources for freshwater aquaculture; however, only about 40 percent of the available area is used for aquaculture currently. In northern India, open waters with in-flows are common, while southern India has watersheds, termed as tanks, largely used for crop irrigation along with carp fish culture.

29/10/2015: First MSC certified whole lobster for Christmas in the UK… and it’s at Lidl for UK£4.99

https://www.msc.org/
Image: Rex Sorgatz
The five pound Christmas lobster has been a Christmas favourite for the past few years but, until now, it’s been difficult to know if it is sustainable. This year, Lidl has joined forces with the Marine Stewardship Council to introduce the first whole lobster that is MSC certified as sustainable. And this year, it costs less than a fiver.

Cold, clean Canadian waters

The MSC certified lobsters come from the cold, clear waters of New Brunswick, Canada. The sea is a defining part of New Brunswick life. Nearly two thirds of the population life within 30 miles of the sea and local residents describe it as ‘the best lobster in the world.’

Lobster fishing is only a very short season, just two months, to protect the stock and make sure the lobsters are in the best possible condition. The fishermen use small boats and baited traps to catch the lobsters and any that are too small get returned to the sea. All of the fishermen live in small towns around the coast of New Brunswick where lobsters are at the heart of the local economy.

Getting to the UK
Like many crustaceans (including the prawns and shrimps used for sushi), lobster freezes incredibly well and the New Brunswick lobsters are cooked and frozen locally before being shipped to the UK, providing a low impact treat for Lidl customers.

Long-term commitment
Alexandra Scholes, Fish and Seafood Buyer for Lidl said, "We first introduced Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) products into our stores in 2006 and have continually expanded this range ever since. We are proud to be the first British supermarket to sell MSC assured whole lobster, and in addition to this 100 percent of our fresh ongoing (wild caught) fish is MSC certified and labelled and this range is available in stores all year round."

Toby Middleton, Programme Director North East Atlantic for the MSC said, “Lidl have worked closely with the MSC over the past year to build up their range of MSC certified fish and shellfish. That hard work is really paying off with 41 of their wild seafood products now MSC labelled, a 24 percent increase on 2014. It’s a real commitment to demonstrably sustainable sourcing that is providing a benefit to their customers. This lobster is a perfect example, a great value, sustainable product from the cold, pristine waters of Canada. A perfect Christmas treat.”

29/10/2015; Yara acquires Pilbara ammonia and nitrate assets from Apache Corporation

Yara International has acquired 100 percent of the shares in Apache Fertilisers Pty Ltd, which holds Apache's 49 percent ownership position in Yara Pilbara Holdings Pty Ltd (YPHL), for USD 391 million.

http://www.yara.com/
YPHL owns 100 percent of the Yara Pilbara Fertilisers Pty Ltd (YPF). YPF in turn owns the Yara Pilbara ammonia plant, which has a production capacity of approximately 850,000 tonnes per annum. In 2014 the Yara Pilbara ammonia plant delivered an EBITDA of USD 218 million. The natural gas contract for the ammonia plant contains a price step-up effective mid-2016.

http://www.yara.com/
Image: Michael Spiller
YPHL also owns 20.4 percent of Yara Pilbara Nitrates Pty Ltd (YPN). YPN is constructing a technical ammonium nitrate (TAN) plant with a production capacity of 330,000 tonnes per annum, with completion scheduled for early 2016.

"We are pleased to secure full ownership of the Pilbara ammonia plant, which is the largest and most modern ammonia plant in Yara's portfolio," said Svein Tore Holsether, President and CEO of Yara.

"The Pilbara assets are already operated by Yara, and therefore require limited efforts to fully integrate. The investment will also yield synergies within governance and tax structure," said Holsether.

28/10/2015: A hip hop fish and chip shop is coming to Brixton, UK

A hip hop-themed fish and chip shop is gearing up to open in Brixton, UK, serving “fresh fish, seafood and Old Skool hip hop”, Ben Norum writes for The Evening Standard.

It will sit on the corner of Coldharbour Lane and Atlantic Road, and has already made quite an impression in the area by covering its shutters and outside walls with graffiti depicting famous rappers — including 2Pac and Big L — along with its tag-like logo.

It is the latest project from Michael Lythgoe and his partner Cidalia Rodrigues, who also run Brixton Village Grill nearby and who have lived in the area for 18 years.

Chip Shop will serve the usual chippie fare of cod and haddock with chips, along with pies — homemade not Pukka — as well as fish and seafood including grilled tuna steaks, red snapper and mussel and crab dishes. It will operate as a restaurant but there will also be a hatch serving takeaways.

27/10/2015: Pea Seed protein concentrate in Tilapia feeds

by Josh Cantril, Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture Research, Swansea University, Swansea, UK and Ingrid Lupatsch, Aqua Nutrition Manager, AB Agri Ltd

First published in International Aquafeed, September-October 2015

Peas (Pisum sativum) are one of the four most important crops next to soybean, groundnut, and beans. It is a particularly important legume in temperate areas with numerous food (dry seed, vegetable) and feed (seed, fodder) usages.

http://issuu.com/international_aquafeed/docs/iaf1505_w1/14
Field peas have attracted considerable attention as an animal feed due to increased production in Europe and Canada and thus reliable supply and competitive price. Pea seed meal has been trialled in Atlantic salmon, Rainbow trout and European sea bass with encouraging results.

Peas, when unprocessed, contain moderate levels of protein 22-25 percent but also several anti-nutritional factors (ANF); however, the levels of ANFs in peas are low compared with other legumes and peas did not induce enteritis in the distal intestine in Atlantic salmon as seen when feeding soybean meal. New feed processing technologies have provided more suitable products for use in high protein aquafeeds.

Pea protein concentrate (PPC) is produced by fine grinding dehulled peas into pea flour, followed by air processing which separates the particles based on differences in size and density. The resulting concentrate has higher protein and lower carbohydrate and ANF contents compared with unprocessed peas, and thus would be a promising protein source in aquaculture feeds.

The following study examined the efficacy and nutritional properties of pea seed protein concentrate as an alternative feed ingredient and protein source for all-male tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture incorporating growth and digestibility trials.

27/10/2015: Cermaq CEO: Salmon farming responds to UN Sustainable Development Goals

http://www.cermaq.com/wps/wcm/connect/cermaqen/home/homepage

Salmon farming responds well to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, said Cermaq’s CEO Jon Hindar at GOAL 2015 conference in Vancouver today.

During a presentation titled, 'The role of salmon farming - in light of the global sustainability challenges', Mr Hindar spoke on megatrends in food demand, consumer concerns and the role of the salmon industry.

Mr Hindar painted a grim picture of the future. By 2025, the entire southern hemisphere, and extensive parts of the north, will be suffering some degree of water scarcity. By 2030, we will need 50 percent more energy, 40 percent more water and 35 percent more food. With the world's urban population expected to increase by 72 percent by 2050, aquaculture will be essential to meet rising global food requirements, he said.

Salmon, he claimed, is a good fit with trends in consumer demand, being easy to prepare, healthy and with a low ecological impact.

27/10/2015: West Australia commits to aquaculture certification

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has been chosen by the West Australian Government as the standard of choice for the performance of aquaculture producers in the State, to be assessed as responsible against both environmental and social requirements.

http://www.asc-aqua.org/index.cfm?lng=1
Fisheries Minister Ken Baston said the Seafood Directions 2015 conference, being held in Perth this week, would clearly demonstrate growing consumer expectations that the fish they eat has been sourced from sustainably managed fisheries or fish farms.

"Sustainability in our seafood sector is a key priority for us," Minister Baston said.

"The ASC applies a third-party certification system, meaning that certification of fish farms and fish product suppliers will be done by independent certifiers.

"For our wild-capture fisheries, WA has embraced independent sustainability certification through the Marine Stewardship Council and has been supporting our commercial fisheries to undertake the necessary assessments.

"We have also been moving to expand aquaculture opportunities in the State and the ASC has a metrics based and transparent assessment program.

"Third party seafood certification plays a vital role in global seafood trade, it's important that we get this right."

Chris Ninnes, ASC's chief executive officer, said the Western Australian Government had shown great leadership in its commitment to a sustainable seafood industry.

He said he was delighted the ASC certification program was chosen as independent verification of the responsible management of the State's aquaculture.

In August, the WA Government announced its Statement of Commitment to Aquaculture, recognising it as a legitimate user of the State's land and aquatic resources.

http://www.ourgssi.org/
GSSI Partners say thank you to all participants making the Global Benchmark Tool launch on 8 October in Vigo a success. Special thanks goes to our Partner FAO and to Conxemar for hosting the launch during the exciting 20th anniversary celebrations of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. José Louis Freire, President of Conxemar, welcomed the Tool in his opening address as an important advancement for global seafood trade.

The GSSI Global Benchmark Tool, which is now available online, is the first collective and non-competitive approach to provide clarity on seafood certification worldwide. GSSI Partners are committed to including the outcomes of the Benchmark Process in their daily operations and look forward to the first seafood certification schemes signing up to be benchmarked.
