04/07/2013: Ghana launches aquaculture development; tilapia and tomatoes

The Ghana National Aquaculture Development Plan (GNADP) has been launched, as the country's first blueprint to guide the sustainable development of the aquaculture value chain.
Mr Nayon Bilijo, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, on Wednesday expressed the ministry’s displeasure and abhorrence to the haphazard siting of cages on the Volta Lake by fish farmers.
He mentioned Sedorm, Gyakiti, Kpeve, Kagyanya and Akuse as communities in the Volta and Eastern regions were the offending farmers were located and advised them to follow laid down procedures.

Implementation of the plan will cover a five year period at a cost of US$85 million.

Tomatoes and fish thrive in an artificial environment that uses technology to ensure optimal results. Dirty water from fish tanks provides nutrients that are essential for plant growth.

As a result, a new project in Berlin aims to grow vegetables and farm fish together in zero emission conditions.
