Aquaculturists prepare for typhoon in Taiwan

Aquaculturists in Taiwan are preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Soulik by removing fish from ponds in case of flooding.

The aquaculture and agriculture industries are often the worst hit by typhoons so they are taking steps to minimise the impact. Farmers have harvested crops earlier than planned.

In 2009, a Typhoon Morak devastated the country's aquaculture industry, causing more than NT$4.1 billion in losses. One of the major problems was ponds being filled with mud which killed the fish and was time consuming to remove.

Typhoon Soulik has been downgraded to a medium-force typhoon but transport has already been disrupted.
 

People have been stocking up on food and have been advised to prepare to stay inside for up to 24 hours.
