With the next World Aquaculture Conferences being in Adelaide, Australia in June 2014 and
the following one on Jeju Island, Korea in 2015, it is fitting that there is increased contact and
communication between aquaculture participants in both countries.
World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014 Chairman, Dr Graham Mair said “there are some real
opportunities for collaboration and to build a strong partnership with Korea. We welcome the
chance to develop and build a strong link between Australian and Korean aquaculturists and
researchers. This will strengthen conference sessions in both countries and in particular in
the areas of abalone and tuna.”
“Korea is recognised as a leading aquaculture nation in high value aquaculture products and
Australia has much to learn from our regional neighbours," said Dr Mair.
Last year the Australian Abalone Growers Association (AAGA) sent a delegation of Australia
growers to Korea with the support of the Australian Seafood CRC. This year AAGA received
a grant from the Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF), which will allow both countries to further
build on the relationship. The grant for ‘Fostering aquaculture networks, collaboration and
investment between Korea and Australia’ will enable Korean industry groups (targeting
abalone and future tuna farmers) to visit Australia and the World Aquaculture Adelaide
Conference (WAA14).
Dan Machin, on behalf of AAGA, said "it is a great privilege to be awarded this grant, which
will significantly assist us in building stronger ties with Korea through reciprocal business and
research relationships. We learnt a lot from our visit to Korea last year and have been able
to advance our industry through greater knowledge of the technology available in Korea. We
will look forward to hosting the Koreans next year."
Steven Clarke, Chair of WAA14’s internal China-Asia Participation committee and Science
Initiatives Leader for the South Australian Research and Development Institute, said ”I am
delighted in that we will be able to increase the interaction between Australian and Korean
industry representatives. The Korean delegation’s visit to South Australia and the WAA14
conference and trade show in Adelaide is warmly welcomed.”
The World Aquaculture Adelaide Conference websites are now open at www.was.org
and www.aquaculture.org.au for submission of abstracts and registrations.
South Australia is proud to be hosting World Aquaculture for the first time in this continent
since 1999. This annual event organised by the World Aquaculture Society incorporates the
biennial Australasian Aquaculture Conference and Trade Show. ‘Skretting’ World
Aquaculture Adelaide is an opportunity for the international aquaculture community to
present their research/work, exchange ideas and discuss a vision for the future of the
aquaculture industry as they focus on the theme of ‘Create, Nurture, Grow', reflecting the
dynamic nature of aquaculture development in the region.
