10/07/13: Qatar invests in fish breeding; behind the scenes of Cooke Aquaculture; Marine Harvest Canada gets three star BAP status

The government in Qatar has announced plans to build a fish breeding farm and improve the central fish market in Doha.

Mohamed Saeed Al Mohannadi, director of the fisheries department, told The Peninsula that bids have already been invited.

“Work on the project will start in August this year and would likely be completed in February of 2015,” he said.

Cooke Aquaculture is one of the world's largest fish farming, processing and distribution companies.

Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) has become British Columbia's first salmon company to achieve three-star Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification.

MHC's Port Hardy processing plant has earned BAP certification, joining the company's BAP-certified salmon farms and the Skretting Canada feed mill from which it sources feed.

Located on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, the Port Hardy facility processes more than 35,000 tons of Atlantic salmon annually.
