7/10/13: Pioneering mussel farms, government business, and the world’s largest underwater peace sign

A pioneering 30-acre mussel farm in Nantucket Sound, USA is entering the final stages of its lengthy planning process, reports the Cape Cod Times. Although aquaculture is well-established in nearby Prince Edward Island, Canada, the farm would be the first such project carried out in federal waters.

Still on the subject of American aquaculture, a recent column in North Carolina, USA’s Salisbury Post has pronounced positively on a recent government report on the country’s increasing dependence on farmed fish imports. The skills and infrastructure are in place, says ‘Optimistic Futurist’ Dr Fran Koster, but local government needs to step in and help.

The UK government’s minister responsible for fisheries is to resign as part of its ongoing reshuffle. Richard Benyon, Conservative MP for Newbury, had been part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) team since the Coalition came to power in 2010.

The Miami New Times reports on a new Kickstarter project to regenerate coral reefs off the Florida Keys in the United States. If built, the limestone structure, shaped like a peace sign, is expected to be colonized by local algae and sponges. As things stand, the project has raised US$3,181 of its $50,000 target.
