An Israeli professor has been awarded the
inaugural Novus Golobal Aquaculture Innovation Award at a ceremony at the GOAL
2013 conference in Paris. Dr Amir Sagi of Ben Gurion University received the
gong for his research into sorting giant river prawns by gender.

Aquaculture giant Skretting has opened ‘the world’s largest
fish feed plant’, really an expansion of an existing factory in Norway to
increase its capacity by 50%. The plant, which remained operational throughout
its renovation, will now produce up to 12,000 tonnes of fish food per week.
The Alaska Journal reports that a Walmart-linked think tank has begun working on criteria to
evaluate seafood sustainability programmes in America. Although the project is
highly secretive, it is expected to officially launch in 2014, amid rumours the
supermarket giant will drop its support for MSC-labelling of its fish products.
