Hilucia by Innovafeed: a new brand to unlock the power of Hermetia Illucens

February 26, 2024 - In order to support the acceleration of its production and sales growth, which more than doubled in 2023, Innovafeed today unveils its new brand Hilucia, redesigning its offer around a complete range of high-quality ingredients for animal and plant nutrition, with minimal environmental impact. Hilucia embodies the combination of the exceptional upcycling capabilities of the Hermetia illucens larvae with the cutting-edge technology developed by Innovafeed's teams.

"Enhanced and expanded with two new products - Protein for Monogastrics and Oil for Aqua - the Hilucia range reaffirms Innovafeed's anchoring and leadership in its four main markets: pets (Hilucia for pets), livestock (Hilucia for monogastrics), aquaculture (Hilucia for aqua), and agriculture (Hilucia for plants)." Elizaveta Le Floch, Chief Business Officer of Innovafeed.

The culmination of several years of development

The Hilucia range is the result of an extensive effort made in recent years by Innovafeed's teams and is based on four fundamentals:

  1. Strategic partnerships developed with major players in each industry such as Cargill for aquaculture (insect proteins), Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) for pet food (Insect proteins and oils), and Hello Nature for agriculture (insect frass). These partnerships ensure that Innovafeed maintains a strong momentum across all markets - both in France and abroad.
  2. Committed to minimising the environmental impact of the company and its products. Accredited as a B Corp company since 2022, Innovafeed recently realised its first Impact Report in January 2024; and since February 2024 has been a certified member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition in the pet segment.
  3. Nutritional expertise acquired through trials conducted at both laboratory and commercial scales. The Hilucia range is based on a deep understanding of the needs of each species. It is thus tailored based on in vivo studies to provide the best zootechnical performance possible. This is particularly the case in aquaculture, where Innovafeed is involved in the Millennial Salmon project among others, which includes eight leading organisations across the value chain and aims to bring to market the most sustainable farmed salmon in the world.
  4. The strict adherence to the most demanding quality standards. The recent acquisition of a Marketing Authorisation (AMM) for its organic fertiliser in France is a recognition of Innovafeed's expertise and excellence, opening up the opportunity to offer an innovative and effective solution in a broad market of 7 million tonnes (according to Unifa) with growing demand. This authorisation complements an already ongoing deployment in several other European countries with our partner Hello Nature, a global specialist in organic fertilisers.

The combination of an exceptional insect and a unique production model

Hermetia illucens larvae transforms low-value plant-based raw materials into high-quality nutrients with unparalleled efficiency: they use 1.5kg of dry feed to produce 1kg of body mass in just 15 days.

Leveraging these exceptional capabilities, Innovafeed has created a unique model of 'industrial symbiosis' that maximises the natural productivity of Hermetia illucens larvae. This model is based on the clustering of facilities with suppliers of the two main inputs required for insect rearing: agricultural co-products for larval feed and energy. The facilities are directly connected by pipelines, which significantly reduces environmental impact, transport needs, and production costs.

High-quality ingredients with low environmental impact

The ingredients of the Hilucia range aim to meet the growing demand for high-quality food products - it is estimated that global protein demand will increase by 40 percent by 2030 - while meeting sustainability requirements, both in resource use and CO2 emissions.

Leveraging a deep understanding of the needs of each species, Innovafeed is working to provide nutritional solutions that offer the best possible zootechnical performance. For example, it has been shown that Hilucia Protein for Shrimps could significantly reduce morality and increase performance in shrimp farming.

Furthermore, a life cycle analysis was conducted on the ingredients in the Hilucia range, and it was demonstrated that they generate at least 50 percent fewer carbon emissions compared to the most commonly used plant and animal proteins, oils and fertilisers on the market (such as fish meal, vegetable oils, poultry manure, etc.), while also having a lower impact on biodiversity, land use and water consumption.

A commitment to transparency for consumers

With Hilucia, Innovafeed creates a simple and identifiable brand that signifies quality with sustainability, responding to consumers' need for transparency. Innovafeed even offers customers the option to feature a 'powered by Hilucia' logo on their packaging. As testified by Gabriel Huertas del Pino, Co-founder, and CEO of Arch Pet Food: "Partnering with Innovafeed marks a significant to excellence, sustainability and innovation in the pet food industry and we're proud to display the label and story directly to our customers on-pack in our new Smart Future Formula. Together, we're setting new standards for what pet owners can expect, bringing a new era of quality, trust and transparency to the table!"

The stakes are high in pet food: in the United States alone, over 4 million tonnes (according to Pet Food Institute) of animal-derived products are currently used to formulate dry food or wet food!

ASC farms supported with extended feed supply transition period

February 22, 2024 - Following extensive industry consultation, Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has extended the transition period for ASC certified farms to switch to ASC compliant feed.

Farms now have until October 2025, as opposed to January 2025, to change their supply of feed to come from mills that have been certified against the Feed Standard. The change in feed supply is necessary for producers to continue meeting the ASC Farm Standards and to retain their certification.

Feed mills that haven't already started the certification process should prioritise obtaining ASC Feed Standard certification. There is an incentive to join the programme as soon as possible: those feed mills that get certified in 2024 will not have to pay license fees on the volume of complaint feed they produce this calendar year.

The demand for responsible feed globally continues to grow. With certification, feed mills ensure their readiness to meet this escalating demand and will secure their place in the evolving market landscape, as well as clearly demonstrating their commitment to greater environmental and social responsibility.

The new timeframe supports farms by giving them more time to make changes to their feed supply chain. It also ensures that the available volumes of complaint feed produced by certified feed mills will be sufficient to meet demand.

The extension deadline coincides with the planned launch of ASC's new Farm Standard, which will create a single farm-level standard to provide greater consistency and brings together requirements across all farmed seafood species currently targeted by ASC.

ASC farms will continue to meet the feed requirements outlined in their respective farm-level standard to provide greater consistency and brings together requirements across all farmed seafood species currently targeted by ASC.

ASC farms will continue to meet the feed requirements outlined in their respective farm species standards until they switch to sourcing from a certified feed mill.

Alexandra Warrington, Senior Coordinator, Feed Standard at ASC, explained, "The decision to extend the compliance deadline for the Feed Standard highlights our dedication to close collaboration with the industry. This extension period reflects our commitment to supporting farms in their journey towards more responsible practices, allowing them the necessary time to adapt and ensuring a robust supply of compliant feed is available to them in the market."

There has been strong uptake of the Feed Standard already, with Vimifos and Skretting achieving ASC certification for multiple feed mill sites in Mexico and Chile respectively. With more sites already in the audit process, ASC's Feed Standard is generating a wave of positive change in feed production and continues to gather momentum.

New study reveals the transformative power of aquaculture in Zambia

February 20, 2024 - A new study reveals for the first-time substantial benefits from adopting smallholder aquaculture for Zambian farmers. The research, published in Agriculture & Food Security, provides compelling evidence of how fish farming diversifies livelihoods and improves food and nutrition in rural areas.

"Showcasing the role of aquaculture to food and nutrition security of rural homesteads in Africa is a relatively difficult thing to prove. For the first time our study in northern Zambia shows that smallholder aquaculture can be a game-changer for local farmers," said Alexander Kaminski, PhD researcher at the University of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture who undertook the research at WorldFish. "By integrating fish farming into their agricultural practices, households not only diversified their income sources but also significantly improved their dietary variety and overall food security."

The research compared households with and without fishponds, demonstrating that those engaging in fish farming experienced a noticeable enhancement in their livelihoods. These benefits extended beyond a mere income generation leading to a richer, more nutritious diet and a more resilient agricultural system. The study found that adopting aquaculture gave households two time more likelihood to improve their food security status.

Shakuntala Thilsted, CGIAR Director of Nutrition, Health and Food Security and WorldFish Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health at the time of the research highlighted the implications of the findings. "This study provides clear evidence that fish farming is an invaluable component in the fight against food and nutrition insecurity in Africa. It provides evidence that nutrition-sensitive homestead aquaculture can enrich diets and create sustainable farming systems that benefit the entire communities."

IFFO's estimates of the 2023 fishmeal and fish oil production and insights for 2024

February 13, 2024 - A taste of the many statistics and analyses found in the market intelligence reports that IFFO dedicates to its members is reported below, covering IFFO's analysis on marine ingredient market trends.

In Peru, which accounts for 20 percent of global fishmeal and fish oil production in average years, recent observations show unexpected sea warming off Peru's central coast, despite El Niño weakening. In the North-Centre area, the next acoustic research cruise for the first fishing season of 2024 is expected to commence mid-February.

IFFO's preliminary estimate of the overall cumulative fishmeal production for the countries analysed in its reports is at around 1.738 million metric tonnes (MT) in 2023, around 23 percent less than in 2022. The primary factor contributing to this decline can be attributed to the 52 percent year-over-year decrease in Peru, whose fishing activities were heavily affected by the El Niño phenomenon, with the cancellation of the April-June fishing season in the North-centre, and a lower-than-average fishing quota for the last quarter of the year. Interestingly, the European countries analysed in this report were the only ones to show an increase in cumulative fishmeal output in 2023.

Regarding fish oil, the total output in 2023 was down by 21 percent compared to the previous year. The significant supply drop in Peru (down by 85 percent year on year) was the main cause of this negative performance, resulting from both fewer landings and lower oil yields.

Chile was the only region that managed to register a year-over-year increase in production, thanks to healthier catches and higher-than-average oil yields in the souther regions.

Bearish conditions in both pig and aquaculture markets cause drop in China's fishmeal imports

At present, fish processing in China is focused on frozen fish caught in the past months. On the trade side, the year-on-year drop in China's 2023 fishmeal imports can be attributed to the bearish conditions in both pig and aquaculture markets. The aquaculture sector finds itself in a quandary due to an oversupply of aquatic products and a sluggish demand. According to the China Feed Industry Association, the aquafeed output in 2023 reported a 4.9 percent year-on-year decrease. Industry insiders don't expect much change in the first half of 2024.

The pig sector, which is a significant user of marine ingredients in feed, continues to grapple with an oversupply. According to the latest release from the National Bureau of Statistics, pork production in 2023 increased by 4.6 percent year-on-year - the highest production since 2014. In turn, pig feed output increased by 10.1 percent year-on-year in 2023. Oversupply and higher feeding costs are squeezing pig farmers' margins forcing them to drastic cost-cutting measures, including new feed formulations.

SAIC celebrates a decade of its impactful skills programmes

February 6, 2024 - The Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) has boosted the skillset of almost 500 individuals across the aquaculture sector since the launch of its skills programmes in 2014.

Alison Gray and Jillian Couto-Phoenix

SAIC has equipped 200 academics with the skills to thrive in the seafood industry, including MSc scholarships, PhD funding, and paid work-placements. Its programmes have also upskilled a further 294 private sector workers and university researchers through a range of mentoring initiatives, leadership courses and digital skills training.

To commemorate the milestone, SAIC brought together industry leaders in skills development, a mix of early to mid-career professionals, and new entrants into the sector for an afternoon of networking and discussion at Dunblane Hydro. The 'Nurturing Talent in Scottish Aquaculture' event showcased the diverse initiatives in place to upskill the existing workforce and support the next generation of talent.

Jillian Couto-Phoenix, head of skills at SAIC, and Alison Gray, founder and director of Skillfluence, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of skills and knowledge exchange in driving innovation with impact and safeguarding a sustainable future for the sector.

Up next was a leadership showcase, which involved a reflective Q&A session with a group of individuals who took part in SAIC's nine-month leadership cohort. This was followed by a fireside chat with a panel of early to mid-career professionals who discussed their personal experiences and successes from the innovation centre's various skills initiatives.

The event concluded with an open discussion on the power of mentoring programmes, shining a light on the Women in Scottish Aquaculture (WiSA) network and its impact on encouraging more women to enter and progress in the sector.

Vimifos and Skretting first feed mills to attain ASC Feed Certification

February 5, 2024 - Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is delighted to celebrate the first two pioneers to achieve certification against the requirements outlined in ASC's Feed Standard: Mexican-based feed producer Vimifos and the Chilean branch of global operation, Skretting. This marks a significant milestone in ASC's mission to transform seafood farming towards more environmental and social responsibility.

Both Vimifos and Skretting undertook a rigorous audit process over several months for their sites. The conclusion of the audits has established that their processes and performances meet the Feed Standard's robust environmental and social requirements. SCS was the independent certifier for Vimifos, whilst Control Union carried out the audit of Skretting Chile.

Vimifos was the first to achieve multi-site certification for three of its feed mills in Mexico that produce feed for shrimp, tilapia, trout and marine fish. Skretting has also achieved multi-site certification for two feed mills in Chile that produce feed for salmon.

Chris Ninnes, ASC CEO, said: "This is not only a milestone for Vimifos, Skretting and ASC, but pivotal for the whole industry to strengthen the credibility of fed seafood farming now and into the future. Our Feed Standard sets a higher benchmark for feed production. We applaud Vimifos and Skretting for their commitment to venturing into new territory with us - they are the trailblazers and their certification paves the way for the rest of the industry.

"There is no responsible seafood farming without responsible feed. Companies involved in its production face increased by reporting demands to assess the 'upstream' environmental and social impacts from feed-ingredient supply chains. By setting strict requirements for the sourcing of all major feed ingredients, ASC addresses environmental and social risks down to raw material level. Ensuring responsibility soured feed supports responsible seafood farming and thereby responsible sourcing of seafood products on shelves. With these first certifications, the journey towards more responsibility coming from greater transparency and traceability in feed production has gathered significant momentum."

Skretting CEO Therese Log Bergjord commented: "We are extremely proud to be the first salmon feed company in the world to achieve ASC Feed Standard Certification. This is a highly demanding standard that moves in the right direction towards ensuring a positive impact across our supply chain, but we know that the journey doesn't end here. We're already implementing the learnings from Chile to accelerate the certification process across the rest of our operations and, with that, ensure that our customers can keep relying on Skretting to maintain their own certifications for fish and shrimp."

With two further feed companies currently in audit for four sites in Thailand and Ecuador, the programme is gathering strength and increasing in global coverage. This progress shows that ASC is collaborating with a wider sphere of influence to drive positive change in the feed production industry.

As global demand for farmed seafood continues to grow, it is vital that the entire aquaculture supply chain transforms towards more environmental and social responsibility - the Feed Standards is a significant step in the right direction.

By making the bold choice of 'shared governance', Agronutris is also at the forefront of innovation in management. Its organisational methods have been completely rethought to make them democratic spaces of freedom, co-construction and trust. At the same time, the hierarchical and functional organisational systems have been replaced by a neural organisation in project mode, based on strategic goals that encourage individual and collective commitment.
