New study shows the potential of using fish by-products

Fish farming by-products have the potential to increase the sustainability of aquaculture, and contribute to other sectors – such as food, diet supplements, animal feed and cosmetics, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture found by-products – such as fish heads, frames, trimmings, skin and organs – are an underutilised resource that could support the sustainable growth of Europe's aquaculture sector.

As part of the Green Aquaculture Intensification in Europe (GAIN) project, Stirling PhD researcher, Wesley Malcorps, found that a large proportion of commonly farmed species – Atlantic salmon, European seabass, gilthead seabream, common carp and turbot – were being routinely wasted in industrial and household processing.

Mr Malcorps says, 'Although fish by-products don't sound appetising, they are full of goodness and can be used for many purposes – including in food supply and diet supplements. Our results show a substantially higher total flesh yield (64-77 percent) can be achieved if fish are fully processed, compared to fillet only (30-56 percent), as is often the case.

'Heads, frames and trimmings from all species show potential to increase the food supply, in soups or processed foods, such as fish fingers, sauces and fishcakes. They could also be processed into food extracts and nutraceuticals – such as protein powders, fish oil and collagen supplements – potentially producing a higher economic value.

'Organs can be used in animal feed, as can skin, due to its high protein, low ash content. With their high level of valuable omega-3 fatty acids, feeding by-products to livestock would also contribute to nutrition in the human food chain, and by-products can also be used in pet food too.'

Importantly, the current 33 percent of by-products that is used in fish feed – such as fishmeal, fish oil and protein hydrolysate – could be increased, which could greatly reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture.

Mr Malcorps says, 'European aquaculture is dependent on imported feed from marine and terrestrial systems, such as fish meal, oil and soy, particularly for carnivorous species such as salmon. Substituting plant for marine ingredients just shifts the impact from sea to land, and also risks compromising the health and welfare of the cultured animal.'

Finally, the study showed potential industrial uses of by-products, in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and packaging.

'Fish skin offers potential for extracting collagen and gelatine, as an alternative source to cattle or pigs,' Mr Malcorps adds.

Fish skin also has potential for use as fish leather for the fashion industry.

The study was overseen by Professor Dave Little, also of the Institute of Aquaculture, who says, 'Using the whole fish is a key component of the sustainable intensification of seafood. There are issues to address in terms of technology and infrastructure, which would need capital investment to resolve, but our analysis indicates that by-product separation could add value and nutritional efficiency.

'It could increase aquaculture's output without using more resources.'

The paper, 'Nutritional characterisation of European aquaculture processing by-products to facilitate strategic utilisation,' is published in the journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems.

RINA's approval of offshore fish-farming vessel

The ship classification society, RINA, has recently announced its approval of a new-concept offshore fish-farming vessel, Ocean Ark.

The vessel is developed by Ocean Arks Tech of Chile (OATECH) in accordance with RINA Rules and Marpol, Solas and IMO regulations. It delivers a new approach to fish farming and will dramatically improve fish health, crew comfort and the industry's image.

The ocean may present a solution to meet the nutritional needs of a growing world population. Deploying the Ocean Ark away from marine heatwaves, algae blooms and storms - all causing strain on aquaculture production - would produce higher quality protein and increase world fish production without increasing pressures on fish stocks and coastal habitats.

With its capacity of 4,000 tonnes of biomass, this technology allows for the low-density production of healthier, higher-quality fish at lower costs than offshore, land-based and coastal aquaculture systems currently available. The Ocean Ark can operate near Asian, US and EU consumer markets to reduce transport emissions.

RINA Marine Principal Engineer for North West Europe, Patrizio Di Francesco said: 'Sustainability is a core strategic pillar at RINA, but this is not just about reducing carbon emissions. A sustainable food production chain is also needed to supply an increasing global demand for nutrition. We believe aquaculture in the open sea is one solution that will help for the future.'

The fish-farming vessel is a self-propelled, AI-assisted, low emissions trimaran that is 170m long and 64m wide. With its artificial intelligence and self-cleaning fish cages made of copper, the vessel ensures fish health and welfare and are high.

'This is an unusual vessel. Its AiP presents a milestone for both the fish farming industry and for the classification of ships with an unconventional design. It is an innovative approach to the sustainable harvesting of fish to help ensure food security and sovereignty and one which may revolutionise fish farming for the future,' Di Francesco concluded.

New funding call opens for sustainable innovation in aquaculture

The Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) has launched a new call for proposals for innovation projects that will help to increase the economic impact and reduce the environmental footprint of aquaculture.

Projects must focus on an area of key priority for the aquaculture sector: innovations for continued improvement in fish biology, regeneration and environmental practices, with grant funding available to take commercially relevant ideas and concepts to the next stage. Research teams submitting proposals must include an industry partner working collaboratively with at least one Scottish Higher Education Institution.

SAIC said that for this latest funding call it would particularly encourage applications that cover the integration of multiple species, such as multitrophic aquaculture. Teams have until the 8th December to submit an expression of interest and must be ready for projects to begin by 1st June 2022 with collaboration agreements in place four weeks after funding has been awarded.

At their core, projects must be innovative in their approach or lead to innovative solutions that will help support the Scottish aquaculture sector and associated supply chain and be aligned to SAIC's priority innovation areas: supporting finfish health and welfare, unlocking additional capacity in the sector, or a focus on shellfish and other non-finfish species.

SAIC will provide as much as 50 percent of the overall project costs and is looking for ideas that can demonstrate long-term commercial impacts and opportunities for widespread knowledge sharing, contributing to the sector's overarching ambition for sustainable growth as well as SAIC's aim to increase the economic impact and reduce the environmental footprint of aquaculture.

The new call for proposals builds on an investment to date of around £9.37 million (US $18 million) for 65 collaborative research projects. For every £1 invested by SAIC, the innovation centre has so far generated an additional £3 of industry investment, helping to unlock valuable developments that can benefit the entire sector – in Scotland, the rest of the UK, and internationally.

'Sustainable aquaculture has a crucial role to play in meeting the increasing global demand for protein and collaborative research can unlock significant opportunities to transform and future-proof the sector. By working together to develop ground-breaking science and data-driven approaches we can secure Scotland's future as a producer of high-quality seafood that is reared to the best possible standards,' says Heather Jones, CEO of SAIC.

'SAIC is committed to supporting innovation that enhances fish wellbeing, supports rural communities, and contributes to Scotland's economy and we hope to see a range of ideas from across the sector submitted as proposals for funding.'

IFEEDER launches industrywide sustainability project

The Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER), along with The Context Network, officially launched a project this month to develop a sustainability road map for the animal food industry.

The road map will support the advancement of both corporate sustainability programs and climate-smart initiatives with key stakeholders. Through industry and stakeholder assessment, IFEEDER will evaluate risks and opportunities within each animal food industry segment to determine the extent of support to be mapped and further developed.

(CC BY-SA 2.0)

'Our recent conversations with member companies about their sustainability programs have illuminated the fact that everyone in our industry – no matter where they are at in their sustainability journeys – wants to do more to help their customers achieve their climate pledges and meet changing consumer expectations,' says Lara Moody, IFEEDER's executive director. 'By leveraging the expertise of The Context Network, our goal is to use research and analysis to identify and advance strategies and tools our members can use to improve their sustainability programs and meet the needs of their stakeholders.'

The road map development will be conducted in three phases, with the first phase focusing on developing a gap analysis to understand the barriers preventing companies from launching or measuring progress on sustainability programs and mapping the stakeholders impacted by industry initiatives.

The second phase will be to conduct qualitative and quantitative research by working with select scientific advisors focused on environmental sustainability in the feed industry along with AFIA members and key supply chain advisors. The last phase will be developing key findings, tools and strategies the industry can use to advance their sustainability programs and communicate their vision to key influencers.

'A good sustainability road map will enable all members of the U.S. feed and pet food industry to collaboratively make progress on issues that are important to them, their customers and the communities they operate in,' says Matt Sutton-Vermeulen, principal of The Context Network. 'That means companies that have yet to begin their sustainability journeys will have an 'on-ramp' to get up to speed, while other companies with mature sustainability programs will be able to stay on track to make continuous improvements.'

IFEEDER continues to seek partners willing to join in the sustainability road map project, which is one part of its multifaceted strategies to advance understanding and trust in a sustainable animal food industry. To date, Arm and Hammer Animal and Food Production, Animix, LLC, Anipro/Xtraformance Feeds, Belstra Milling, Berg+Schmidt America, LLC, Bill Barr & Company, Inc., CJ Bio America, Inc., ED&F Man Liquid Products LLC, Elanco Animal Health, Kemin, The Mosaic Company, United Animal Health, Inc., Westway Feed Products and Zinpro Corporation have joined the effort.

Kemin aims to reinforce the immune system, protecting poultry, ruminants and pigs from the not-always-visible, negative effects of mycotoxins.

'The direct effects of mycotoxins, or clinical mycotoxicosis, are not always evident; we mostly see the indirect effects of contamination, such as a weakened immune system, which lead to a higher prevalence of diseases,' says Valentine Van Hamme, Business Manager – Health, Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA (Europe, Middle East, North Africa). 'Contaminated feed is a major challenge across the entire feed industry, but we know that every situation is different and requires a unique solution. That's why Kemin offers a complete TOXFIN® range to ensure the right solution tailored to our customers' mycotoxin challenges.'

Mycotoxin management is crucial, so Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA offers an extensive portfolio of mycotoxin management solutions for its customers, with each product answering specific customer needs.

'Kemin already has a wide range of solutions available in our product portfolio to offer flexibility for our customers, but getting our newest portfolio member, TOXFIN CARE, on the market was crucial because it offers an all-in-one strategy,' says Ms Van Hamme. 'TOXFIN CARE offers extensive protection against mycotoxins because it contains a unique adsorbent blend, prevents oxidative stress, supports and protects the liver and modulates the immune system. This latter functionality, especially algae beta-glucan, makes the product unique.'

Along with a complete TOXFIN range, Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA offers the Mycotoxin Management Toolbox, which allows for correct assessment and offers a solution to address the root of the problem – resulting in solutions for feed safety and overall protection of the animal.

"For successful mycotoxin management, one must select the right product, but other aspects are also critical,' says Ms Van Hamme. 'With Kemin's complete Mycotoxin Management Toolbox, we can support animal nutritionists and health specialists to make informed decisions on the use of raw materials, ensuring high-quality and safe feed formulation. The end goal is to have healthier and more profitable animals.'

Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health – EMENA's Mycotoxin Management Toolbox mitigates mycotoxin risk with Kemin's Customer Laboratory Services feed analysis on mycotoxins; protects production animals using the TOXFIN range of solutions to control mycotoxins; and enables feed control with Myco CURB®, the industry-leading mould control product for feed preservation.

Consortium of companies to tackle digital transformation of fish farms

An international consortium has begun a pioneering €1.3 million (£1.11 million) pilot project, 'Aquaculture Insights' in Badcall, Scotland, that will accelerate the aquaculture sector's digital transformation and support the drive towards enhanced sustainability, productivity, and operational efficiency on fish farms.

Led by Japan's Uhuru United, the consortium includes Amsterdam-listed Signify; Norway's Optoscale AS; the Scotland-based Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC); salmon producer Loch Duart Ltd.; and SB Telecom Europe Ltd. With their combined efforts, the group is creating an 'open data' software platform that will provide a single point for fish farmers to interact with and understand the data produced by the variety of technologies being used on their sites.

Over the last 20 years, there has been significant growth in the number and diversity of technology used in aquaculture – ranging from fish health diagnostic tools to remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs). However, the vast majority tend to work in isolation, which limits the value of data that can be taken and increases the amount of time required to monitor operations.

The pilot project will tackle this challenge by creating a single software package combining multiple data sources, offering insights that cannot be provided by existing systems. The initiative will also enhance the visualisation and transfer of data from connected devices and systems, beginning with Signify's underwater LED lighting system and Optoscale's AI-enabled biomass camera.

Aquaculture Insights is receiving funding from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), which is part of the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Yosuke Kurihara, Project Director of Uhuru United Ltd., said: 'We are delighted to be leading the consortium on this important and ground-breaking project. We first established operations in the UK not just because it is a global centre for technological development but also because of its leading credentials in the field of sustainability. As such, this project is a perfect fit, using cutting-edge IoT technologies to best understand how we can maximise the efficiency of food production for a more sustainable future.'

Heather Jones, CEO of SAIC, said: 'Better access to insightful data could be transformative for aquaculture, helping the sector to be more efficient and sustainable, while also helping fish farmers to develop new ways of working. Aquaculture Insights could have significant potential for aquaculture, supporting its sustainable growth ambitions, which need to be underpinned by technological innovation and excellence. We were delighted to help secure Loch Duart as the farming partner for real-world trials of this innovative technology.'

Sven Kolsto, CEO of Optoscale AS, added: 'Joining this project is very interesting to us – we get the chance to work alongside excellent partners and we get to showcase our unique product used in combination with other innovative solutions. We look forward to learning what value we are able to provide to the aquaculture sector, together with our partners in the consortium.'

Dutch companies Dinnissen and Ottevanger join forces in process technology

Dinnissen Process Technology and Ottevanger Milling Engineers have announced that from 16 November 2021 they have formed a strategic alliance to realise customer value, synergy and focus together.

The alliance takes shape through a participation in Dinnissen by Bolster Investment Partners and Triott Group, the holding company which Ottevanger forms a part of.

The collaboration allows Dinnissen to focus more on high-end processing solutions for food, dairy, chemicals, pet food and pharma. For Ottevanger, the alliance offers the opportunity to strengthen its position in the international feed market.

This step fits in with the ambition of the companies to realise value creation, continuity and growth in a sustainable way. Both production technology companies have a strong international customer base, which largely complement each other. With the alliance, the companies will continue to shape collaboration in areas such as customer projects, international services, R&D, innovation and efficiency.

For Dinnissen, the alliance means the company can serve its customer group even better. Also, the collaboration with the Triott Group companies offers the opportunity to further expand the range of automation solutions, 24/7 support and dosing and storage systems.

For Ottevanger, the alliance offers the opportunity to strengthen its position in the international feed market. Dinnissen's high-end machines strengthen the current range in the field of food grade and hygiene.

Bolster Investment Partners has a lot of experience in (internationally) expanding Dutch manufacturing companies and is joining this partnership as a long-term investor. Bolster will support the alliance in realising its growth ambitions with a strong network and with knowledge in the field of organisation, strategy and professionalisation.

Frans Bakker, CCO Dinnissen Process Technology comments, 'We are facing the next growth step for our company. This alliance with Ottevanger and Bolster enables us to achieve this and to continue our healthy future. We want to follow our customers even more internationally, and strengthen our service and 24/7 support. Ottevanger has been a solid player in the international processing industry for years. We complement each other very nicely.'

Ernst-Jan Ottevanger, CEO Ottevanger Milling Engineers and Triott Group says, 'Dinnissen is a wonderful company, built on values that have many similarities with our values: customer-friendly, progressive and with an eye for the human dimension. This alliance fits in with our growth strategy. We are confident we can offer our customers even more with this.'

Joost Bakhuizen, partner Bolster Investment Partners comments, 'Dinnissen and the Triott Group companies are exceptional Dutch companies with strong international market positions and leading customers in feed and food. The companies are complementary to each other. We see many opportunities for further growth from the perspective of synergy. This investment therefore fits in perfectly with our long-term strategy.'

BioMar’s quarterly release shows commercial success challenged by raw materials and logistics

The quarterly release from BioMar reveals as expected a solid growth across markets with a significant increase in volumes and revenue. However, the bottom-line results are affected by global increases in raw material prices, logistic costs, and energy prices.

During the pandemic, BioMar has managed to grow commercial relationships across the divisions through strong collaboration with customers to build new feed concepts and commercial opportunities. The commercial success is being emphasised by the quarterly results for Q3 2021, where the volume sales grew by 11 percent year-on-year and reported revenue was up by 17 percent.

'Looking at the world around us, we are now in the middle of a situation, that is completely changing factors of our industry's cost structure in a way and at a speed that we have not seen before. Through the pandemic, it has been difficult to conduct business, but our business model is founded upon a belief in local agility and empowerment of our business units, which has enabled us to find strong commercial paths together with our customers. Now that the game is changing completely, we need, as an industry to find solutions on how to overcome this volatility,' explains Carlos Diaz CEO BioMar Group.

'The current situation of high prices of raw materials, freight and energy is unfortunately not expected to improve over the next few months and the general supply situation is expected to remain challenging. While it will affect our earnings in the short term, we will make it a priority to be able to ship goods continually to customers worldwide as we play an important role in the supply chain', concludes Mr Diaz.

The EBITDA for the quarter fell from DKK 326 million in Q3 2020 to DKK 282 million in Q3 2021 for the consolidated companies, while the non-consolidated joint ventures and associates are recognised in the Q3 2021 consolidated financial statements at a DKK 36 million share of profit after tax, compared with a DKK 44 million share of loss in the Q3 2020 period. The significant improvement was generally attributable to Salmones Austral in Chile, as settlement prices on farmed salmon are now improving strongly in that market from a low point caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Against this background, BioMar has lowered its 2021 EBITDA guidance to the DKK 890–920 million range from the previous estimate of DKK 940–985 million.

Anpario commits to further their sustainable operations

Anpario, the independent manufacturer of natural, sustainable animal feed additives for health, nutrition, and biosecurity, has announced the installation of solar panels at the Company's head office and production facilities. This will help to reduce carbon emissions and meet their net-zero emissions target by 2030 and help fight climate change.

The move to install solar panels at the company's head office and production plant in Nottinghamshire UK will support Anpario's strategy to reduce the impact of its global operation on the environment, thus enabling them to meet their ambition of net-zero for scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030.

The £274,000 panel installation will commence in December 2021, with energy from the sun harnessed to power the manufacturing plant from early 2022. It is anticipated that the installation will generate one third of Anpario's current onsite annual energy consumption, equating to a 43 percent reduction in carbon emissions. The balance of the onsite electricity will continue to be purchased from the grid from renewable energy sources, which have already been adopted as part of the company's overall drive to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, at times when the solar panels generate more electricity than is used on site, the excess will be exported to the national grid and used locally in homes and businesses, reducing the overall reliance on fossil fuels.

The initiative follows significant investment in recent years implementing bulk supply, automation and packaging solutions to reduce energy consumption, lower the impact of transportation and to minimise waste.

Anpario's ambition is to reach net-zero within their own operational footprint by 2030, this includes all scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as scope 3 emissions from business travel. The solar installation will contribute significantly to the company meeting this target and will sustain their continued requirement for operational growth to meet increasing sales demand.

With innovative specialist feed additives produced by Anpario, the company's key focus is to optimise animal protein production by using sustainable natural resources, for the benefit of animals, customers, and human health. Anpario's products support animal health and productivity, enabling producers to achieve a reduction in their carbon footprint associated with milk, meat and egg production - Naturally.

Karen Prior, Corporate Responsibility Director at Anpario comments, 'We recognise that swift and decisive action is now needed to reduce emissions and address the climate crisis globally. Anpario is focused and committed to reviewing and continuing to invest in our own operations to help meet this global challenge.

Our production facility has established benchmark levels to measure scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions and is dedicated to drive continuous improvements to increase efficiency, thus reducing our impact on the environment. This is also crucial to our customers around the world in managing their supply chain emissions and reducing their carbon footprint'.
