22/11/12: Stories on shrimp farms and mangroves, pangasius in Pakistan, grouper viruses

  • Shrimp farms threaten mangroves according to a UN report. Mangrove forests offer natural protection to coastlines, provide habitats of sealife and help slow climate change. However, since the 1980s, a fifth of mangroves have been destroyed due, in part, to the spread of shrimp and fish farms. Read more...
  • A three-year project examining the prospect of introducing the catfish (Pangasius pangasius) into Pakistan has received a Rs3.954 million research grant from the Higher Education Commission. • This study on viruses in grouper is very interesting. The species (Epinephelus spp) is economically important worldwide but viral pathogens such as nervous necrosis virus (NNV) have caused severe infections in the fish, resulting in great loss in the grouper aquaculture industry. Despite this loss, the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenicity of NNV is still inadequate, mainly due to insufficient genomic information of the host. Read more...
