13/03/14: Australian Barramundi Niche

It is very difficult for Barramundi farmers to export their fish to compete with other world producers in Asia, etc. However, Mainstream Aquaculture, based just outside Melbourne in Werribee have found a niche opportunity by producing and selling Barramundi with specific growing traits from their hatchery.
The live fingerlings are placed in oxygenated plastic bags with typically, depending on the commute time, pack two to three thousand fish per bag, within a polystyrene box. These are then loaded on a pallet and sent to their destination via air freight. Fish has been sent as far as continental Europe, the Middle East and into North America.
High hopes for the hatchery in that if they capture their market share, then they will be the supplier to 50 per cent of the entire global barramundi aquaculture industry. Hence one in every two fish consumed around the world could have originated from the facility in Werribee.
