Congalsa and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) announced today (4 April 2014) a partnership dedicated to ensuring the ecological sustainability of seafood supplies. This is the first time a Spanish company has partnered with SFP and represents a significant move in terms of corporate responsibility.

SFP is dedicated to helping businesses source seafood responsibly and works with major seafood buyers across the world. The partnership with Congalsa will involve comprehensive assessments of the sustainability of all seafood sources (both wild and from aquaculture) along with the creation of improvement projects to enhance environmental performance. The ambition is to ensure that all seafood sources for Congalsa originate from approved, certified sources or from fisheries and farms engaged in improvement projects.

Congalsa is Spain´s number one producer of pre-cooked, frozen seafood products and supplies both retail and food service. Announcing the partnership, Luis Miguel Simarro, CEO of Congalsa, said: “We look forward to assuring sustainability for our company and for the seafood sector to guarantee that future generations will be able to maintain our business.”

Pedro Ferreiro of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership commented: “We are very excited to be working with a company such as Congalsa and to be developing this approach in Spain. The ecological sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture is of great concern to both ourselves and Congalsa, and together we can engage the whole supply chain in delivering real improvements.”
