Anpario's Orego-Stim Plus AS supports shrimp health in the absence of antibiotics

Using Anpario's Orego-Stim Plus AS in shrimp feed improved shrimp growth and liveability in a commercial study conducted in Ecuador.

In the study comprised of a pond of 5.6 hectares which was stocked with L. vannamei at 17 shrimp/m2. . The producer had always used Oxytetracycline (70 percent) (OTC-70) for the control of NHP and other bacterial diseases.

Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic commonly used for the control of Necrotising hepatopancreatitis (NHP) and other bacterial diseases. Orego-Stim Plus AS is a high quality eubiotic comprised of 100% natural oregano essential oil and saponins.

OTC-70 would be included in the diet of shrimp weighing 14g at seven kg/tonne of feed for one week. In this study, the pond contained 952,000 shrimp with a starting weight of 8.3g. Shrimp were fed a standard diet supplemented with six kg/tonne of Orego-Stim Plus AS (OS+) instead of the seven kg/tonne of OTC-70. OS+ supplemented diets were fed for one week and the following were measured; weight gain, Vibrio impact, microsporidia, NHP, White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and mortality. The comparative cost of treatments were then calculated.

The addition of Orego-Stim Plus AS to shrimp feed resulted in:

  • Above average shrimp growth during the period of challenge, with shrimp gaining 4.3g in one week.
  • Decreased mortality, which was reduced to 0 percent after just one week of Orego-Stim Plus AS supplementation.
  • A reduction in WSSV by 47 percent, in Vibrio by 20 percent and in NHP by 76 percent.
