16/12/13: Antioxidant supplement use in aquaculture; Chinese government suspends shellfish imports; EU marine project launched

In its purest form, Astaxanthin is used to produce the pinkish-red colour in salmon, trout and crustaceans.

Following a growing demand for astaxanthin in animal feed, particularly aquaculture and poultry, the Business Times of Malaysia recently reported on research into use of the antioxidant in aquaculture.

The Chinese government recently announced that the country has suspended imports of shellfish from the US West Coast, a move that will end one of the biggest export markets for Northwest companies. 

The ban follows the discovery of high levels of arsenic and toxins in shipments of geoduck clams from Northwest waters.

The European Union has launched a project in a bid to better monitor the environmental status of oceans and seas. 

The new project will enable member states to meet their obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
