03/01/14: Aquaculture antibiotic taxes; Venezuela fisheries programme; shark tagging on twitter

A new proposal aimed at implementing fees on non-human antibiotic use in the agriculture and aquaculture has been proposed in order to combat what has been dubbed a "public health crisis," a University of Calgary, Canada news release reported last week.

About 80 percent of US antibiotic use in the sector is for the sole purpose of increasing food supply. According to the report, this overuse is causing bacteria to mutate and become resistant to modern treatments.

Venezuela has signed an agreement to undertake a fisheries development programme with a focus on environmental and economic sustainability, reports the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

As part of the program, the FAO will provide technical assistance and support the transfer of technology and good practices to fishing communities along the Venezuelan coast.

Government researchers in Western Australia are using the popular online social networking site Twitter in order to alert the public to sharks close to the shore.  

The sharks - at least 320 species including Great Whites - have been equipped with transmitters that update a Twitter feed with information about their movements up and down the coast.

If a tagged shark is within half a mile of a beach, the transmitter triggers an alert, which is converted into a message on the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed (@SLSWA).
