The Meghalaya government plans to utilise a portion of agricultural fields for pisciculture to make the state a fish haven within a period of five years. The project is due to begin in April 2012, “Creating fish ponds would not affect agriculture production. In fact, it would supplement the income of farmers. Moreover, only a small portion of the fields would be utilised,” said commissioner and secretary (fisheries department) KN Kumar.
