05/07/12: Alaskan shellfish; Vietnamese tra; Marine Harvest Canada

  • Tra fish framers selling at a loss in Vietnam.  the price farmers sell at has dropped fromVND27,000-VND28,000 per kilo in April 2011 to VND19,500-VND20,000 per kilo today. The cost price of producing tra for export is estimated at VND23,000 to VND25,000 per kilo. Read more...
  • This article on Alaskan community radio station www.krbd.org is a very interesting discussion of the debate concerning the effects of algae on farmed shellfish.  In a nutshell: the state Department of Health and Social Services has warned consumers to steer clear of harvested shellfish.  But aquaculture researchers in the state say high toxin levels in algae blooms don’t necessarily mean poisonous shellfish.  Read more...
