Future talent that can drive innovation will be key to supporting the growth of Scotland's burgeoning aquaculture sector: that is one of the underlining themes of next week's Aquaculture Day running as part of Lochaber Ideas Week to inspire and inform people about the varied and rewarding opportunities in the sector.
Hosted by the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) in collaboration with the Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, the free one-day event on November 17 will highlight some of the sustainable innovations currently being developed by the sector as well as covering career prospects, recruitment challenges and opportunities.Image credit: SAIC
Speakers include Tavish Scott from Salmon Scotland (formerly the SSPO), Isabel Vincent from the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) and Craig Fleming from satellite communications experts, R3-IoT. As part of the morning's session on innovations for sustainability, Yusuke Yamasaki from Uhuru United UK, Chris Matthews from PHARMAQ Analytiq, Eduardo Jimenez Fernandez from Otter Ferry Seafish and the Agri-Epi Centre and Ian Carr from Veramaris will showcase current projects being explored to future-proof the sector.
Some of the topics to be presented include the global adoption of algal oil as a new source of Omega-3; how we can develop new apprenticeships in aquaculture; perspectives on fish health diagnostics; adding value to fish waste and reducing reliance on fossil fuels; and an introduction to Swansea University's new Lumpfish Operational Welfare Scoring Index (LOWSI).
Anyone with an interest in aquaculture is invited to join the event, with the aim of highlighting the evolving skills required to fuel growth, as well as shining a spotlight on some of the emerging ideas and processes that could transform fish farming.

Lochaber Ideas Week includes a week-long programme of events to inspire, educate and motivate the business and wider community of Lochaber and the Highlands. The slimmed-down, covid-safe event returns for 2021 after a two-year break and will bring business communities together not only to focus on and celebrate the power of ideas, but also to inspire and inform.
