Aquaponics is a method of cultivating both produce and fish together, where the waste of the fish is utilised as a food source for the plants grown in the system. The aquaponics system is self contained and able to be set up anywhere, which means that food can be grown on land that is unsuitable for normal soil based agriculture.
Another key element of aquaponics is that its utilities the green energy options. The Sweetwater Foundation working with Society for Appropriate Rural Technology for Sustainability (ARTS) are hoping to commercialise aquaponics in India and to build aquaponics eco parks in Mumbai and Kolkata with a plan to do the same in other major cities in India.
