It is not easy to differentiate between wild salmon and farm bred escaped salmon, but by using physical markings such as freeze branding or clipping the adipose fin or colour marking should show whether a salmon is farmed or wild. This should allow for easier identification and will allow the actual farm where it escaped from to be identified.
“The aim is that we can quickly and with a high level of certainty trace escaped farmed salmon back to their owner or the company responsible,” says Matt Baranski, Scientist at the food research institute Nofima.
