British Scallopers sign up to Responsible Fishing Scheme

Southwest England in the UK, with Devon and Cornwall in particular is one of the nations top spots for rearing and harvesting shellfish. Seafish, an industry organisation aimed at promoting sustainability and best fishery practice, has reported a leading Devon seafood processor are now sourcing all of their scallops from Responsible Fishing Scheme (RFS) vessels having sponsored four of its boats through the Schemes programme.

The company, Coombe Fisheries, who specialise in scallops for the European market and the local South West restaurant trade, have funded the four vessels to join the Scheme. The remainder of the vessels supplying the company are already RFS-certified.

Iain Spear, Director of Coombe Fisheries, said “Achieving RFS certification shows that, with the right methods and knowledge, scallops can still be responsibly sourced. Joining the Scheme, which assesses best practice in fishing methods and responsible sourcing, demonstrates that scallop fishers do care about their impact on the environment" read more...
