The Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) is going to set up boundary wall around the Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant to stop illegal fish farming in the toxic lagoons, senior officials said. Like almost every year, the authorities also carried out a drive this year in May to kill the fishes reared illegally in 16 lagoons of the sewage treatment plant by locally influential people, they added. The DWASA managing director, Taqsem A Khan, on Tuesday told New Age, ‘The construction of the boundary wall will start very soon.’
A senior official, seeking anonymity, told New Age that the 247-acre plant area remained unguarded and needed a security fencing of about 4.5 kilometres around the lagoons to check the illegal fish rearing there. Although there are about 50 Ansar personnel posted for security, it is tough to guard the huge area particularly during the night when the miscreants sneak into the area to release fish fry and net the reared fishes, he added.
