Development of freshwater shrimp aquaculture is underway in Brazil

The Secretariat of Agriculture and the Environment of the Prefecture of Alegre, in association with the Municipal Prefecture of Jeronimo Monteiro,  is developing a project to establish a center for growing freshwater shrimp in the city, in order to meet the growing scarcity of marine fish.

The importance of aquaculture in federal and state governments is demonstrated by the creation of the Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries (MPA) at a national level, and the inclusion of aquaculture in the Secretariat of the State of Agriculture, Water Supply, Aquaculture and Fisheries (SEAG) of the Espírtito Santo Government.

In this context, the cultivation of freshwater shrimp is one of the alternatives to reduce pressure on fisheries, particularly on marine shrimp. The new cultivation center will have Malaysian shrimp, which will be reproduced in a laboratory. Read more ...
