Thanks to modern fish farming tecniques, global fish consumption has increased to new levels according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). In the FAO latest assessment of the global seafood industry they said that fish consumption has climbed to nearly 17 kilograms per person as modern fish farming is starting to over take the traditional trawl catch method.
In 2009 about 145 million tons of fish were caught and consumed, that was an increase on the previous year of five million tons. According to the FAO aquaculture employs nearly 10.8 million workers worldwide or nearly 24 percent of all fishing related employment Where as fish farming only employed four million in the 1990’s.
The FAO states that traditional fishing is starting to stagnate and dwindling stocks due to over fishing and stricter catch quotas are the two main causes for this. Read more...
