Sri Lanka in a strong position to become leaders in aquaculture

Due to a new vibrant program launched in Sri Lanka, to develop their aquaculture industry, could mean that they would become world leaders in aquaculture said Dr. Craig Stephen, Director of Coastal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Calgary Canada.

He went on to say that Sri Lanka is well focused to develop aquaculture in the North and East regions and has potential to breed and export ornamental fish. Dr Stephen was addressing a media briefing at the launch of a collaborative venture between the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and the University of Calgary, Canada to exchange knowledge and address food and nutritional security in Sri Lanka.

He also said that that developing the aquaculture industry is vital to sustain rural liveihood and increase income levels but would also improve nutrition and food security in rural communities.
