In just a few days time the Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service is hosting free presentations about aquaculture on both the island of Saipan and Rota. The first presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 25 at the Terlaje campus on Saipan while the next will take place on Friday, April 27 at the NMC Rota Instructional Site.
Aquaculture program coordinator Dr Benny Ron, from the University of Hawaii, will present on food security and appropriate aquaculture systems. He will introduce participants to UH's Aquaculture Training On-line Learning (ATOLL program), and the worldwide AquacultureHub social network.
ATOLL is a training program to help individuals start their own fish farms by providing online educational instruction, resources and support. The AquacultureHub is a social network that connects people interested in aquaculture. Contact Michael Ogo for more information.
Note: Saipan is the largest island of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a chain of 15 tropical islands belonging to the Marianas archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean with a total area of 44.55 square miles (115.4 km2). According to the 2010 United States Census, Saipan's population was 48,220, a drop of 22.7% from the 2000 US Census; the population decrease is largely attributed to working immigrants and their families either returning to their home countries after the collapse of the garment industry or moving to other locations with economic opportunities such as Guam and the United States.
