Commerce and conservation can live together in
aquacultural terms according to a New Zealand survey which found 90
percent of those taking the survey supporting the statement.
It was one of the key outcomes of a survey that
revealed clear support, for King Salmon's plans to expand its
operations in Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island in
New Zealand has received public support according to the results of
an online survey: in the order of 5:1 for the expansion.

In Marlborough itself 54 percent of respondents
support the NZ King Salmon’s plans to increase production as part
of the aquaculture industry’s goal of becoming a NZ$1billion
industry by 2025.
The company has applied to the Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) to add nine salmon farms to brings its
farms up to 14 in total. If approved, the expansion will increase the
company’s water space by 11ha to 17ha.
Quoted in Scoop Independent News, one respondent
said: “We need jobs other than vineyards. Also, the sounds are huge
and they are taking only a tiny bit - I think some people would have
us look at lovely views but live in poverty.”
Company CEO Grant Rosewarne says: “It’s also very
pleasing to note that 83 per cent of Kiwis believe conservation and
commerce are not mutually exclusive and can work in harmony.”
The hearings are expected to start in mid-August
